    QVC buttons or bust?

    Recommended Posts

    Hi Gents

    i’ve bought a thing.

I should have it this week.

i’ve taken a punt for 65 quid because I think this is a Queen Victoria Crown.
    Any thoughts?

    Fingers crossed ?

If it isn’t a total loss I’ll post some pics when it arrives.

Yes it is Victorian. It's a General Service button worn by other ranks from 1881 to 1902 and probably much later as well. They were churned out by the bucket load and are still common today and can be bought for a couple of quid. I suggest you ask for your money back. Your post was mentioned on the B&CMBForum on account of the £65 price tag, the price is ridiculous.    Pete.

    Hi Gents

    Don’t laugh yet...

    I saw this ‘theatrical piece’

However i noticed the button and also the cuff...

    It came the other day.

It’s the same type of cloth as a Guards tunic. The cuffs are original.

The surprise was under the collar.

So though i’m not sure yet how much of if it is still original underneath the other bits, I’m pleased to say its not a total bust...

    Hi Gents

So far so good. The modern material has been sewn over the original detail.

i really didn’t think the stripes on the front reflected a real design let alone covering over the real ones.

The detail on the tail is also intact.

I’ll update with pics of progress soon.

PS I know from experience that silence from you Gents can mean i’ve got my sht wrong... I remember my first ever post on GMIC enthusiastically declared ‘ Austro Hungarian Major-Generals Uniform’...it wasn’t.

But i would really welcome any thoughts or comments even if crushing in nature ?

Hello Farkas , Perplexity ,I suggest you a little ,how to say ? forensic research , the lace must be made of cotton thread ,i am looking at least part of the lace with a glossy appareance suspicious of rayon content ,the red cloth is key also it must be wool made , the colour appears too good preserved , but that could be for a number of reasons ,ditto for the yellow cuffs . En Fin , Good Luck !

Morning Bayern, i was hoping to hear from you ?, long time no speak, i hope you’re well...

I do know a bit about this.

I’ve bought a few other bits from the same place previously , all were in good condition.

This mess jacket is dated 1924... 22D19F50-8ADF-4A01-B9DA-2C6F4BE284DF.thumb.jpeg.cc5bdd30ca7ddc30bd29d1d89237eee8.jpeg

So now I’ve had a pick at a few more bits...82734C6B-5DBE-4689-B588-C4BAD400D1FF.thumb.jpeg.1bbc6b372e186a9a5d24693b2804ce28.jpeg

it is intact, just some moth nibbles and the same type of wear and tear, ripped armpits that there is on a few old guards tunics i have. It also has the ‘scars’ from missing buttons where expected.

In the pic below the right hand side is original whereas the left still has the new bright stuff.

I really wasn’t expecting the tail lining (facing?) to be underneath the nylon but it is ?

    So far so good,

    thanks Bayern...

Hello Tony , I am well thank you ! hope you too . a few more tips : first the cut of the different pieces of cloth to form the coat, appears correct pattern that is many pieces to spare cloth and to fit better to the body of the wearer. second ,the white piping appears to be made of twisted cotton cord on the right false pocket thats right ,finally ,what about the inner lining and the stuff over the shoulders ?

    Hello Bayern

thanks for the help as always

There are still questions but for now i’ll just accept it’s a nice thing whatever it is.

    Hi Gents

if any of you have any thoughts about its age, the tail stitching, can see later alterations or know who might have worn it even... please let me know,

    cheers

My only thought is that the lace seems a bit plain for a vintage coatee. but might be wrong on that so not saying absolute. If it is a theatrical item, they still display very nicely and run so much less than a real item would. I have several theatrical or reenactor items in my study along with a few vintage pieces, and I am quite happy with the look they give.

It’s been suggested to me that this is possibly a Victorian regimental band tunic, apparently there were still dozens wearing ceremonial uniforms post the 1881 uniform regulation change which makes sense of the post 1881 buttons…

I’ve spent a while over the last year trying to find this one. The colours and style definitely seem Scottish, there is also the possibility this is colonial, maybe Canadian. Colonial might explain the use of this style tunic post 1881.

But right now, I’m going for… a Scottish Regimental Band.

I bought this 👇 at the same time, possibly Scot’s Guards but now I think it is more likely The Cameronians…

Maybe this tunic is related 🤷‍♂️.

The buttons have the curved sides which i believe are Scots Guards.

I’m hoping that is the case (?).

Lovely find! I have several Napoleonic costume/ reenactor uniforms that I picked rather cheaply a good number of years back, but still enjoy the look they give my study. I also have a nice '60s Welsh Guards tunic and a 48 Highlanders tunic. I think yours truly has more history than any of mine ever will!!!

ah but Terry, remember yours have made it all the way from good ol’ blighty to the great state of Tennessee, USA… so they’ve definitely got a story to tell too!

I’m glad to hear a Welsh Guards tunic has a place in your collection, I don’t need much encouragement to show pictures of the ones in mine…

    2 Grenadier Guards

    2 Scots Guards

    1 Honourable Artillery Company

    1 Irish Guards

5 Welsh Guards (well, I am Welsh after all)

1 Life Guards for good measure.

Tony, That is one beautiful splash of red you have there. The only other real uniforms I have now (no more room after downsizing a few years back) are my fathers Air Force retirement uniform, my father's WW2 crew Chiefs uniform and an 82nd Airborne uniform worn by a dear friend who served in Afghanistan after graduating West Point. He gave me one of his combat worn uniforms. All of these are genuine treasures to me.

I also have a nice 48th Highlanders doublet, which I think may be from the '60s???

I can see why you didn’t part with those 3, Fathers own and friends Airborne… priceless pieces.
