    1. My first thought were "patches" for the cooling sleeves of the MG08 and MG08/15 ;-)
    2. I cannot answer that :-( I rememember reading it in an "interwar" book some time ago... if they were talking about the French 75 or German Field artillery, or one of those assault guns, i am not sure... and for the life of me i cannot remember where it was.... So the term must have originated 14-18, but only gained popularity in 39-45
    3. The French had names... only German one I am aware of is a Ratsch-Bumm... but that may usually refer to the gun itself?
    4. That clears up the Abrahamse grave then.... The Turn over of Graves was probably every 20 years or so? Abrahamse is a coloured name, District Six the coloured area at the time...
    5. Interesting article... http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwone/shellshock_01.shtml
    6. Most armies had them as issue items for small repairs in the filed, I have seen Issue French, US, Brit, Belgian... I guess the Germans had to buy them... Here are some of the contents of an issue French one..
    7. I think it may be pretty hard to date... maybe any time before the war?
    8. Agree, I think a nice commercial product, probably had buttons, threads and needles...
    9. The 2nd one is very hard to make out... what are the other dates? I see 3 on the doc, but very hard to read....
    10. Hi, approved by the 50th Infantry Division August 1917.... i imagine you want to check where the 50th ID was in June-July ;-)
    11. Then I assume the badge for a Forestry Officials/Wardens service cap.
    12. Hi, Finally identified, It is a badge for Forestry Officials Best Chris
    13. Please check out whats new..... A Passchendaele Machine Gunner, Mutiny in paradise and a new page of Minenwerfer Photos... http://www.kaiserscross.com/152301.html
    14. Yeah, but my thoughts run more along the line of the Platoon commander has a number "5" and as it is all within the same company anway... he keeps that as company commander, and the old company commander is given to the new platoon commander. I imagine the number on a pistiol is of little interest to an officer... at the limit they can give him the one with the best bluing...
    15. Yeah, but they are all in the company weapons room, what if in 1912 the commander of the 1st Platoon was promoted and took command of the company... would he switch Lugers? Silly Question, but mostly we see officers with Private purchase smaller calibre pistols... was it like this before the war as well?
    16. Hi, I would not put too much stock in the number within the company. Best Chris
    17. Hi, I am pretty sure it is 36 Füsilier Regiment no matter if script or not. I imagine the company numbering of the 08s was random, otherwise they would have to trade weapons whenever someone left or there was a reshuffle? Best Chris
