I have just bought a small photo album, not very good condition, maybe 20% military and 80% family and house.... Would it be morally ok to take out the military pages and mount them in protective binders? Or does one have to be pious and keep it all together?

I am no expert and do not know why the shield and sword is on the scroll, but the first one looks Italian made ? Maybe 1944, 1945?

Although I seem to remember that the official decision not to recuperate iron Crosses only came about later... in this case it was already authorized in 1910

My understanding is that it is a position/Trench that is perpendicular to the rest of the defensive positions... so if the refensive position runs north to south, the querriegel would be off at an angle...

In August 1916 the Alpenkorps combat troops were totally "smashed" ... As the Staff was still able to function and knew the terrain, the combat elements of the Division were sent to the Argonne and came under the command of the 33rd Div, while the combat elements of the 33rd Div were sent to Verdun to fight under Alpenkorps command... this only lasted for a couple of weeks or so the the complete Alpenkorps was sent to Romania... So this was only possible for a couple of weeks in 1916... I am not sure if these are under thew Alpenkorps command at Verdun or under the 33rd Div in the Argonne. I assume the guy with the white ribbon is detached from the Alpenkorps staff...

Interesting! I was just about to type that I thought may be relevant for Prussia, but not the other Länder. The EK was not an issue as there was a law passed just before WW1 saying they did not need to be returned?

I somehow doubt this, it would mean that the German State took over the rights of the Bavarian King, Sachsen King etc. etc... ? An intersting topic indeed, I would be interested in any info... but I am guessing that it never happened....

Could it have been done out of frustration and lack of good communications channels? i.e. the medal is ordered, the engraver asks for the details, they send the date, he says he needs the names, they think "Damn... we don't have the names... and by the time we get a message out there and wait for the answer we will be old and grey"... so they tell the maker just to put the date on and Basta! I imagine it was a ship every two months kinda deal?
