Could it have been done out of frustration and lack of good communications channels? i.e. the medal is ordered, the engraver asks for the details, they send the date, he says he needs the names, they think "Damn... we don't have the names... and by the time we get a message out there and wait for the answer we will be old and grey"... so they tell the maker just to put the date on and Basta! I imagine it was a ship every two months kinda deal?

MGSSA 10 EK1, Nivelle Offensive....

Hi, it is hard to get a good shot of the pic... it is very rudimentary... basically like a questionmark laid on its side and the straight bit flattened out and soldered.... -
OK, here we go.... http://www.kaiserscross.com/286801/640801.html I think a very good cross section of documents showing that what we read about the white ribbon cross is mostly wrong. It is not an award for non combatant soldiers like medics... it is not even an award for soldiers on the homefront... It is basically a civilian award for service on the home front. All arguments and opinions welcome...

Calling the White Ribboned Iron Cross 1914 a "Non Combatant`s" cross is an error It WAS a cross for non combatants... but not in the same way the 1870 White ribboned cross was.... You can break the 1914 Cross down into 4 categories.... three of which were for non combatants, only one of which had a white Ribbon.... More to come.....

A group to Franz Engl, The EK1 to a Bavarian Corporal is very very scarce indeed, rarer than a Silver Bravery medal. Engl got his one for Extreme Bravery as a messenger in the forest of Malancourt at Verdun, and further excellent achievements as a patrol leader in Various Battlefields. The Helmet place is a battlefield find from Verdun, the divisional insignia shown did not belong to Engl, just for display.

The local hardware store has some great frames that are very easy to modify to make great frames.... Bit by bit I will reframe my groups.... The first frame has two groups to Bavarian Leib Regiment men who fought at Fleury. For anyone interested in the battle of Verdun, Fleury is one of the most important and bloody parts of the battlefield. The top group is a silver bravery medal group to Hans Mennacher the lower group to Franz Zwieknagel.... The Edelweiss with Zwieknagels group is a post WW1 Leib Regiment veterans Edelweiss.
