    1. although not military, maybe the style will be familiar? Can anyone coment on this? http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=1477 Thanks Chris
    2. The combat infantry badge is timeless. This? When the army changes bayonets again, this will simply be an outdated bayonet with a grenade noone recognises. A k-Bar with a WW2 Era US grenade would have been more instantly recognisable. This looks more like a close-cbt instructor badge. maybe folks who get it will have been in a combat situation, but will they have any connection to fighting with a bayonet? Maybe the guy who did the design had "connections" or it was decided to go overboard with a design intended to raise moral? An award like this should be timeless... this looks like a display in a surplass store
    3. Ahh... not even the K-bar--- that would at least have a historical aspect... this is that new M-16 bayonet. I would have thought someone in the army historical dept could have made a nice design relevant to the traditions of the army. This looks like a trendy design to go with the Rah-Rah-fight song.
    4. I dont like the grenade on it... if you are an average person, no military intrest you wont know what it is... looks like a knife with a "round thing of some sort" behind it.
    5. Hi, he was a builder (I think). Anyway, he died in the 50s, he fell off a building scafold while working in a brewery. Best Chris
    6. Maybe because WW2 crosses have such minimal differences (when compared to imperial ) that when an obvious difference comes along, collectors jump at it. best Chris
    7. Something about a national donation for swiss soldiers and their families. If it was given for fundraising or if the families gor the badge for whatever reason is not 100% clear.
    8. Enough for tonight, have to go to bed. As the rules state, post your ooh's and Ah's, but for nice indepth discussions, we can pull the relevant toys into the relevant forums for discussion and chat. Gnight all best Chris
    9. Another English speaking South African, this maybe the first wounded South African of the war, blinded in the first skirmish with the Germans.
    10. Okay, not really a Boer.. a South African of Australian origin ;-) Has a siege of mafeking bar on the QSA, then earned a DSO in South West Africa, and LATER an MC in East Africa.
    11. This was for a Boer to young to serve in the war, but in 1902 he was one of the 25-30 Boers who volunteered to fight in Somalia, he must have been 15 or 16. He then fought in German South West Africa then German East Africa (Invalided out with malaria)
    12. Does anyone have the slightest clue why the Spanish Peace in Morocco medal has a metal star of david pinned to the ribbon ? Like on the middle of this page. Most of them have it. http://www.emering.com/medals/french/morocco.html
    13. Nice, any idea of how many of these were awarded? Is this one named or not? Best Chris
    14. Hi, here you go. This is somewhere out of the wives family, I got a mint WW1 era produced cross with it as well. A big medal bar was there as well, but got lost along the way (man, I would have loved that). This is like this, right from the maker. only markings are DRGM 653146. The back fittings are a tad bigger than Meybauer ones and more "machine made" ala WW2 as opposed to the more "artisan" made WW1 fittings of the same style. Best chris
    15. Hi Dave, I have all his EK docs added in, have been hesitating with the books as it will contain a good % of "doubles" where the date is factored in because of the doc already being couinted. best Chris
    16. I have the casauly lists, they are a terrible muddle. give me the name, unit and whenhe was there and I will see what I can do. best Chris
    17. Na, just the same DRGM that the WW1 made versions have. I used to have a WW1 made one, same DRGM patent and meybauer coat of arms.
    18. Hi, it is a larger LDO type of cross (made in WW2 period, WW2 size) but for a 14-18 piece.. and a later version of the screwback we sometimes see on WW1 era meybauers.
    19. Hi, Do you have any info on german medics in the Boer war? I may have a few books somewhere where they are described. best Chris
