    1. Interesting! I was just about to type that I thought may be relevant for Prussia, but not the other Länder. The EK was not an issue as there was a law passed just before WW1 saying they did not need to be returned?
    2. I somehow doubt this, it would mean that the German State took over the rights of the Bavarian King, Sachsen King etc. etc... ? An intersting topic indeed, I would be interested in any info... but I am guessing that it never happened....
    3. Could it have been done out of frustration and lack of good communications channels? i.e. the medal is ordered, the engraver asks for the details, they send the date, he says he needs the names, they think "Damn... we don't have the names... and by the time we get a message out there and wait for the answer we will be old and grey"... so they tell the maker just to put the date on and Basta! I imagine it was a ship every two months kinda deal?
    4. Here is an article covering the 3 variations of non Combatant.... http://www.kaiserscross.com/286801/640801.html
    5. Hi, it is hard to get a good shot of the pic... it is very rudimentary... basically like a questionmark laid on its side and the straight bit flattened out and soldered....
    6. OK, here we go.... http://www.kaiserscross.com/286801/640801.html I think a very good cross section of documents showing that what we read about the white ribbon cross is mostly wrong. It is not an award for non combatant soldiers like medics... it is not even an award for soldiers on the homefront... It is basically a civilian award for service on the home front. All arguments and opinions welcome...
    7. Hi, am I correct with Waffe nmeister Jakob Coberger ? 22nd Bavarian Infantry Regiment? For some reason there is no Ancestry entry for him :-(
    8. Calling the White Ribboned Iron Cross 1914 a "Non Combatant`s" cross is an error It WAS a cross for non combatants... but not in the same way the 1870 White ribboned cross was.... You can break the 1914 Cross down into 4 categories.... three of which were for non combatants, only one of which had a white Ribbon.... More to come.....
    9. The Germaan Toom Hardware stores sell perfect Pinewood frames, you just need to modify then a timy bit and you have a superb frame with about 2cm depth..... here the 2nd bavarian Jäger group to Lt d. Lw Zieglewalner and the bullet that wounded him. The Edelweiss was not his....
    10. A group to Franz Engl, The EK1 to a Bavarian Corporal is very very scarce indeed, rarer than a Silver Bravery medal. Engl got his one for Extreme Bravery as a messenger in the forest of Malancourt at Verdun, and further excellent achievements as a patrol leader in Various Battlefields. The Helmet place is a battlefield find from Verdun, the divisional insignia shown did not belong to Engl, just for display.
    11. The local hardware store has some great frames that are very easy to modify to make great frames.... Bit by bit I will reframe my groups.... The first frame has two groups to Bavarian Leib Regiment men who fought at Fleury. For anyone interested in the battle of Verdun, Fleury is one of the most important and bloody parts of the battlefield. The top group is a silver bravery medal group to Hans Mennacher the lower group to Franz Zwieknagel.... The Edelweiss with Zwieknagels group is a post WW1 Leib Regiment veterans Edelweiss.
    12. Ahh.. I thought I remembered such a book... I had a couple of these some years ago and someone had posted the citations for me...
    13. For a long time I have had these large Bavarian straps for the 12th Infantzray Regiment... Chip identified tham as being from a prewar greatcoat... but I have never found a pic... until now I think? Does anyone know what model these are?
    14. Hi, What are the Criteria for the medal? Were they wearabler in the 3rd Reich? Thanks Chris
    15. Just sortin through my stuff, trying to decide what stays and what goes :-)
    16. HI, unless I am wrong... i think there is a book with all the citations for this medal? So it should be possible to find out why he received it?
    17. HI, nope, when Hitler came to power Uniforms and Medals became important and Interesting again... SA, NSFK, NSKK, Postmen, Firemen etc. etc. were all wearing medals again, something noone was interested in in the 15 years before that... so you see a lot of these 1930s wound badge docs for guys who were awarded the badge (or in some cases should have gotten it but had demobilised and could not be bothered to chase one down) and had no proof... so they applied for these docs confirming their entitlement top the wound badge...
