    1. Paul, some snippets on his earlier career: Frhr. v. Bierdermann was born in Chemnitz and entered Sch?tzen-Regiment "Prinz Georg" Nr. 108 in 1871. In 1876 he was appointed as the Adjutant of 2. Bat. 8. Landwehr-Regiment D?beln. Returning to his regiment in 1878 he was promoted to Hauptmann on transfer to 6. Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 105 on 22 Feb 1886. Regards Glenn
    2. Rick, He was transfered as the "Platz" Engineer on the island of Helgoland on 1 August 1911 with a simultaneous subordination to the 1. Ingenieur-Inspektion. His final prewar transfer to the staff of the Engineer Committee in Berlin was on 20 November 1913. Regards Glenn
    3. Chris, ALL officers and military officials with equivalent officers' rank were authorized to wear a Litewka and later Kleiner Rock. Regards Glenn
    4. webr55 does have a point, my Langenscheidt dictionary gives a translation of ?konom as an "agriculturist" whereas ?kononomie as either economy or agricultural undertaking. Regards Glenn
    5. SPM, no your man is not the Graf. The Freiherr died in 1886. Graf von Beust was a former Sachsen-Weimar officer who died in 1889. He was born a Graf. Regards Glenn
    6. Hi UM, that would be Generallieutenant Friedrich Hermann Graf von Beust. Looking again at our Baron, the Litzen on his collar and the "embossed" (gepre?te) appearance of the half-moons on his epaulettes suggests that of the Sachsen-Altenburg Kontingent pre 1866. Regards Glenn
    7. Heiko, from his entry in the 1904/05 Ordens-Almanach he was an economist living in M?llheim, Baden. Thats all! Regards Glenn
    8. SPM, the biggest problem is that in the Gotha covering the Barons (Freiherren) no Tilo Freiherr v. Beust is listed. I am thinking that "Tilo" must have been a name he commonly used but was not Christened as such. Judging from the age of the photo (1860 -1870 ish) this leaves two "suspects" from the 1st or Moderwitz line: Major a.D. Joachim Friedrich Ottomar Freiherr v. Beust, 7 Oct 1910 - 19 Sep 1886, former Ducal Saxon-Altenburg Major and Major a.D. Gottlieb August Maximilian Freiherr v. Beust, 12 May 1827 - 6 Mar 1909. a former Prussian Major retired in 1872. It cannot be the latter as he held only a long service medal in 1871. Regards Glenn
    9. The Regimental Commander of G.G.R.4 was Oberst (27.1.18 F) Karl Oskar August Freiherr Grote, born 15 September 1865 at Nienburg a.d.W. He commanded the regiment from 22 Jan 1918 - 26 Jul 1918 moving on to command the 73. Infanterie-Brigade. He died on 20 December 1953 as a Generalmajor a.D. He was a battalion commander in I.R. 72 in 1914. Regards Glenn
    10. Hi Areim, here is his entry in the Stammliste of the Kaiser Wilhelms Akadamie. Regards Glenn
    11. Fregattenkapit?n Paul Vehlhaber born 19.9.93 in Parchim in Mecklenburg. Promoted to that rank on 1.10.40. 8.37-4.40: Administration Officer Ships' Artillery School. 4.40-5.40: Administration Officer 1. Abteilung Ships' Artillery School. 5.40-9.42: Administration Officer Flak School. 9.42-1.43: Administration Officer Artillery Arsenal Wilhelmshaven. 1.43: Placed at Disposal (z.V.) Regards Glenn
    12. Today I received in the post a copy of the extremely rare January 1911 Prussian reserve and Landwehr officers' list. As a bonus I found inside the front cover the invoice or Rechnung to its original owner who bought it nearly a 100 years ago! Leutnant der Reserve Paul Ferdinand Peddinghaus, a factory owner in Barmen, later Hagen was a reserve officer in Husaren-Regiment Nr. 17. He was commissioned on the 18.10.02. Promoted to Oberleutnant der Reserve on 18.11.11 he presumably rose to the rank of Rittmeister der Reserve during the war (sometime after May 1916). He survived the war. Incidentally he paid considerably less for it than I did. Regards Glenn
    13. Paul, something to consider: the label is dated December 1942 for an Oberarzt (Oberleutnant). It is inconcieveable that he could have risen to the rank of Oberfeldarzt (Oberstleutnant) in the next 30 months. Regards Glenn
    14. Daniel, my pleasure A lovely photo. Gandenberger v. Moisy wears the adjutants' sash on account of his being the 1. Adjutant to the Governor of Kiautschou. Regards Glenn
    15. It seems likely that all four were brothers. All are shown as being protestant and being the son of an Oberst i.G. The two wartime Knights are definitley brothers being the sons of Oberst i.G. Karl Schoch and Maria n?e Heymann. Regards Glenn
    16. Dave, his pre-war career. Wilhelm Valentin Ludwig Gandenberger v. Moisy: Born 2 November 1868 in Gie?en. Regards Glenn

    18. Chris, not sure about the signature but your Vogelgesang is one Mar.-Intendanturrat Ernst Vogelgesang, with a Bestellung as such from 1.10.12 B. Regards Glenn
    19. Dave, III./I.R. 75 was Prussian. It's two sister battalions being affiliated to the Free and Hanseatic City of Bremen. According to the Wehrordnung, Stade belonged to the Prussian Regierungsbezirk of Stade. Regards Glenn
    20. Hauptmann Dr. phil. Max Wei? retired from the Army on 18 August 1913 with permission to wear the uniform of Infanterie-Regiment Herzog Karl von Mecklenburg-Strelitz (6. Ostpreu?isches) Nr. 43. Following his retirement he was an assistant in the Reich Colonial office and living at Bayerischer Platz 13/14 in Berlin. Regards Glenn
    21. Stijn, wrong Wei?!! The correct Wei? was not in the Schutztruppe but attached to the Reichs-Kolonial-Amt from I.R. 148: Char. Hauptmann Max Wei?. This from the 1913 Army List. Regards Glenn
