    1. I think he was on the Arisan Maru. Probably # 0-021195 see the WW2 on-line memorial
    2. Doesn't it show up in navy ranklists? I am certain I have seen photos of wehrmacht soldiers wearing them and certainly SA men.
    3. Really cool stuff Hunyadi! What else did a person get with the Restoration medal? Is it possible to obtian photos of these in wear at all? I got this yesterday off ebay. Any idea what it might be at all? Thanks-
    4. There have been groups out there of BB & Co. awards that are clearly marked on the packets "awarded to such and so by Emire whoozit on x.v.16". We can be reasonably certain that BB & Co. were war time awards by their ubiquity. If they weren't issue, they wouldn't show up in Bulgarian flea markets with regularity-and of course in old WW1 vets' effects. They captured them and kept them. We know by Bannermans' catalogue that they were around as of 1922 (the year the print was set, although I think the catalogue was Spring, 1923). Also, I believe there are BB & Co. pieces in Turkish groups. I have a reprint of the bloody ridge diary as well as Eturin's book and as I remember, both indicate BB & Co. were awarded in theatre pieces. Given the turkish archives still exist-it might be possible for some intrepid soul to discover the contract for these.
    5. another almost mint medal. The "Munkas-Paraszt Hatalomert Emlekerem" or "Restoration of the Workers and Peasants Rule Medal", 1957. Awarded to those who remained faithful to the Stalinists during the 1956 uprising and help crush the revolution. About 20,000 awarded.
    6. Military Merit Medal: 1957-65 version, only for members of the military:
    7. sent you a pm Captain! NICE badge. Below is zinc Sztahanovista workers' badge with no serial #. Awarded in 1954 this type was phased out shortly thereafter. Look at the enamel work-superb!
    8. #1 is the "Munka Erdemerem" of 1954-'the Labor medal': 20,652 awarded. #2 is the "Szocialista Munkaert Erdemerem:1954-57" or the 'Socialist Labor Merit Medal': 7,092 awarded. #3 is the "Kivalo Szolgalatert Erdemrend" or the 'Merit Order for Outstanding Service': 4,248 awarded.
    9. und a bar @ 1980. What do you think Ed-worth starting another "bars" section in the OMSA database perchance?
    10. Here is the 1959 , 40th Anniversary of the Revolution Commemorative medal-28,001 awarded, possibly to 1919 Communist revolutionarys who fought the Freikorps and Horthyites as well as to undeserving Communist Apparatcheks.
    11. by the way Ed: Did you know the hungarians also had a Spanish Civil War commemorative medal? Only @ 174 awarded.
    12. Now that is a beautiful medal: 17,656 awarded between Oct. 24, 1949 and April 4, 1953 for "furthering and supporting the interests of the Hungarian Peoples' Republic and general distinguished merit. See Charles Duncans' translation of "Nagy Magyar Kitunteteskonyv" by Bogdori et al.
    13. Great thread! perhaps this banker is she? But I also googled a church secretary in berlin with that name. http://www.berlin.de/sen/finanzen/steuern/...rschaften3.html
    14. Another one: This one was awarded to the communist old Guard-no Nagy supporters got these. Slightly less than 10,000 were ever issued.
    15. OK: Will do-the most common award, the excellent workers badge. A friend of mine is in the process of writing a really good article about these;there were a lot of variations of the badge and redesigns made to reflect both the political and economic changes in Hungary from 1949-89. It's the most common Communist era award out there and lots of fun to collect-and so far, cheap, with no fakes. The early ones are really well made too.
    16. I have NEVER seen a period picture of a GI with any medal worn except bravery medals and the good conduct medal. Only ribbons were issued until AFTER the war. My understanding is though that the order should be: Good conduct/US Emergency/US Campaign:defense/ European/ Pacific/ Victory/ Phillipine medal(s). Most ribbons were worn three across and often done wrong. I suspect most period GIs did theirs chronologically or by the regs and most GIS-at least those who were out by October, 1945-did not actually ever receive their victory ribbon until they were civillians again-if then!
    17. This is GREAT NEWS!!!! Any chance we can get copies of the copies or that you will publish any rolls? CONGRATULTIONS on identifying the bar!
