    1. Yes #1 is correct - keep digging. It has partly to do with his name - in his reasons for survivial....
    2. OK - Here is my question - Hungarian Communist of course: Kun Bela was the defacto leader of the Communist Hungarian Party in the Soviet Hungarian Republic of 1919. The question is in two parts - 1) During World War One he was captured on the eastern front by the Imperial Russian Army. What camp was he sent to? 2) While he was in the camp he was involved in a revolt over the distribution of Red Cross parcels. He was to be court marshaled but a strange twist of events occured which saved his life from certain exectution - what were the circumstances? Enjoy!
    3. Honored to be asked agian - I shall come up with a question ASAP - though it may take a few days - really busy right now! :jumping:
    4. Szia Peter - the attack on the Hungarian Communist Party HQ happened after the AVH made the decision to put all of its conscripts, NCOs and offciers into police uniforms. Too many were being lynched for wearing the military style uniform - there were even accounts of AirForce men beign attacked as they wore blue piping on their uniforms - blue and green were bad colors to wear during those days. According to "From Kun to Kadar the Communisit Party in Hungary" the men who guarded the HQ were regular AVH who had only switched to the police uniform the day before the attack, but the locals and revolutionaries had seen the ruse and when the meat truck pulled up to the HQ instead fo the local butcher where the civilains were waiting in line - the civilains had enough and stormed the HQ. By contrast a huge majority of the Budapest police under the command of the Budpaest Police Chief immediately sided with the revolution as early as October 24/25
    5. Yes - the Kadar era they had to manipulate the size of the boards as they were the sewn in type - cant have a "large braod shouldered" general with stubby boards. The Rakosi boards (1949-1956) for generals were of a different size as the general staff was always a little on the portly side. They also used Soviet six sided baords - even though the regulations called for a five sided board.
    6. Gordon - I have seen a photo of the gorget in wear - but I stupidly did not buy it as the picture was a distance shot - you could only make out that it was a Hungarian uniform and that a gorget was being worn.... As for that book - WOW - never seen it! It must be a very rare item
    7. Hi Gordon - Check with your other hard baord about this - I know the regulations state this - but I have yet to find another board that was larger than the others - I think they had that as an idea at first - but it was dropped for production purposes. (this happened alot - the regs even said that collar tab devicese were to be gold for officers and silver for NCO's but this never happened until after 1957) All the boards in my collection are the same size as I recall - I had a hard time beleving this when I read the regulations - so I checked... The only true difference was the use of a cloth or "bullion wire" (its shiny???) field - on this NCO board it is the yellow cloth type which was intended to be used for everyday use - the bullion wire was to be used for parade.
    8. Szia - This was an award made by a Magyar Szovetseg in Austria (az nem bisztos! feletettem) for its memebrs after WW2. There was a thread about it not long ago, but I cant find it sorry! Udv Charles
    9. Az Magayr! (Its Hungarian) Basically (off the top of my head) the reverse reads: "National Associtaion of Middle Schools Sportsgroup" "Competition Prize" I belvied that this organization was supported or a subsidary of MOVE the anti communits pro nationalist organization. I see these medals quite frequently in gold, silver and bronze - the ribbon should be the national tricolors.
    10. Good job picking that one up! Seems the medals go for about $100or so...
    11. Its an interesting example - the enamel is deep and very "fine" it was made to impress. The characteristics and the case suggest that it was made in the 1980's, but the quality is no where near to the standard 1980's issue.
    12. Thanks for all the input - will see when I get it into my hands! :jumping:
    13. so it could even be a 2007 issue uniform? :(
    14. OK - thanks for all the replies - but just to clarify: 1)Certainly not a Sub guy. But a torpedoman on a PT boat or destroyer or ??? 2)Possilby WW2 era tunic? or can it be no ealirer than 1950 per Davids comments? I really lucked out on this one as search on ebay for "unknown" turned this one up....
    15. Just got this from ebay - though I only collect US itmes as a side - I could not resist the bullion rank / qualification badge on this one. Though I dont have this one in hand, would it be safe to say WW2 to Korea vintage? I am also going on a limb to think that this one had 6 overseas stripes - I would guess Silent Service or PTboat??? any moe additional information on her would be greatly apreciated.
    16. I would even venture a cleverly crafted 'anti war' grouping. I cant find anythign about this guy on the net save for this 'grouping'. The letters seem a bit hokey as well, lots of detail that generaly should have not been written about in a combat zone. (detail in places, locations, how effective the enemy is etc...) Even as an officer and censoring his onw mail - he should have known better....esp if he is concerned about his men...
    17. Left you had the KISZ badge for support of the organization while working in a separate field. (IE not directly related to KISZ) there was also a military version with crossed PPSh's for those in the military who assisted in the organization. The next two are military sports badges for military districts / bases. Not much is printed about these badges unfortunatly and I dont have any photos of it in wear.....
    18. Jeff - you have the one on the left correctly identified - this was a medal given for excelletn work in the Young Communist Youth Group (KISZ). My beleif is that these were awarded to the 'Den Masters' for acomplishments. On the right you have a distinguished Public Security Medal in Bronze (thats what the scan material looks like). The ribbon distinguishes it for the "Karhatalom" or the armed branch of the AVH (State Security Police). The medal was instituted in 1951 and the Karhatalom ribbon was authorized in 1954. The Karhatalom contin ued to serve after the 1956 revolution as a standing force to take down any further insurrections. The branze grade was for 5 years of service, Silver for 15 and Gold for 30.
    19. Bryan - very nice badges - what is scrathed into the reverse of post #1? Does it say 1989???? these are getting harder and harder to find - esp in this condition....you have done well!
    20. The Combat Leadership Badge was instituted in 1931 but where it was to be worn on the uniform was not regulated until 1933. As these cadets and instructors wear the standing collar you are certainly before 1939 when the M39 uniform was introduced. To date - I have not run across any "collectors copies" - IE ones mean to decieve - for the Combat Leadership Badge - yours is legit, but I can double your moeny if you are not comfortable with it.....
    21. OH - trust me I know - calculation for Sept 2007 to present day of shipping - 1000lbs.....
    22. On post #10 - this is a document saying that he has reached the age of fifty and therefore has served his time for being called up for the armed forces in the event of WW3. It lists his separation rank (but its hard for me to read) - which was more than likely his rank at the end of his required conscription. I wish I didnt have a moratroium on buying - that was a great catch! Its too bad I dont have any more of my Munkasor groups anymore.......
    23. Seen hundredes of them - this is the Excellent Socialist Brigade Company (as in group - not capitalist venture) It is my beleif that these were awrded to the group for displaying at the Brigade HQ and fell in line with the awarding of the "company" badge that everyone could wear who was part of the group. Here is from a previous thread on the awardign of the badges from a 1979 book The General terms of the Socialist Brigade are to reach, surpass or exceed the required realization of our slogan by ?Living the socialist life, its mode, its work, and its teaching? The sooner we attain this level the better it shall be for all of us. It is therefore required that we dismiss and discipline those of the collective who neglect the communal requirements. These are the conditions for which the title and badges of the Socialist Brigade is to be bestowed: A) The requirements for the title of ?Excellent Workers Brigade? (Kiv?l? Munkabrig?d) are a year or more of exemplary performance by the collective, for this accomplishment the title shall be awarded. For those Socialist Brigades whose majority of members is under the age of 30 and who participate in the yearly KISZ organization, its competitions and its yearly action program, this collective shall be awarded the title ?Excellent Youth Brigade? (Kiv?l? Ifj?s?gi Brig?d) The title of ?Excellent Workers Brigade? or ?Excellent Youth Brigade? is given in the form of a certificate to each of the collective members. This title does not carry a monetary award. B) There are three requirements to attain ?Socialist Brigade? (Szocialista Brig?d) title or the ?Excellent Workers Brigade? or the ?Excellent Youth Brigade?. First all titles are given out for the exemplary accomplishments carried out during the period of one year. Secondly additional awards can only be given out after the required previous title is bestowed upon the collective. Thirdly the title must have the appropriate proof and documentation that the collective was able to exceed their yearly pledged goals. These titles do not carry any monetary award. The ?Socialist Brigade? title is given on the occasion of the first year of service. Each member of the collective is to personally receive a certificate of the title. For the second instance in which the ?Socialist Brigade? title is given, a small green wreathed badge is bestowed in three classes: gold, silver and bronze. The next highest class is awarded when the members of the collective already poses the previous grade. Proof by certificate is required for individuals to be awarded the next highest class. C) The second title awarded to the collective is the ?Banner of the Socialist Brigade? (Szocialista Brig?d Z?szl?). In order to attain this title the collective must already possess the title of ?Socialist Brigade?. This title does not carry a monetary award. D) In the third instance, the collective is to be awarded the bronze, silver, or gold ?Socialist Brigade? title. The grade that shall be awarded in each instance is one that the brigade does not already possess. A monetary award is given for this title and certificates are required to certify this award. The grade that is to be awarded in every instance one grade higher than the one that the brigade already possesses. The bronze, silver and gold titles come with 400 HUF, 600 HUF, and 800 HUF awards respectively and are given out according to the average number of employees of the brigade over the period of the year for which the title is given. E) The title of ?Enterprising Excellent Youth Brigade? (V?llalat Kiv?l? Ifj?s?gi Brig?d) is awarded for exemplary and continuous measurable performance over the period of a year with the same conditions outlined in the ?Excellent Youth Brigade? (majority of members under the age of 30 and participate in the over the year in the KISZ organization) and two previous awards of the title ?Socialist Brigade? in connection with the KISZ organization, its action program and its yearly competitions. The title ?Enterprising Excellent Youth Brigade? and the required two titles of ?Socialist Brigade? shall be awarded from December 31st, 1977 to December 31st, 1980 for the performance, competitions and relevant programs in the KISZ organization until new titles and award for this organization shall be revised. This title comes with a monetary award of 1000 HUF to each member of the collective. F) The title of ?Enterprising Excellent Brigade? (V?llalat Kiv?l? Brig?d) is given to the collective when it already possesses the gold grade of ?Socialist Brigade? and at least five previous titles of ?Socialist Brigade? and increases the pledged quota of work by 10%. Even if the pledged quota is exceeded, the members of the collectives must possess the golden grade of ?Socialist Brigade? in order for this title to be bestowed. Along with the badge, 1500 HUF is awarded according to the average number of employees of the brigade over the period of the year for which the title is given. G) The title of ?Professional Excellent Brigade? (Szakma Kiv?l? Brig?d) is bestowed when the collective has ten or more titles of ?Socialist Brigade? and the title of ?Enterprising Excellent Brigade? or ?Enterprising Excellent Youth Brigade? and increase the pledged quota of work by 10%. This title is reviewed and if the requirements are met awarded in the middle and / or at the end of the yearly action plan. It is possible for a collective to receive the title twice in one year. Along with the badge, 2000 HUF is awarded according to the average number of employees of the brigade over the period of the year for which the title is given. H) The title of ?The Hungarian People?s Republic Excellent Brigade? (Magyar N?pk?zt?rsas?g Kiv?l? Brig?d) is bestowed when the collective had fifteen or more titles of ?Socialist Brigade? and at least two titles of ?Enterprising Excellent Brigade? or ?Enterprising Excellent Youth Brigade? and at least one title of ?Professional Excellent Brigade?. The title shall be awarded upon the review of the middle and / or end of the yearly action plan of the collective. However to maintain the integrity of the award only 80-100 collectives may receive the title per year. Along with the title, 3000 HUF is awarded according to the average number of employees of the brigade over the period of the year for which the title is given. Also each member of the collective that receives the title ?Enterprising Excellent Brigade? or ?Enterprising Excellent Youth Brigade? or ?Professional Excellent Brigade? or ?The Hungarian People?s Republic Excellent Brigade? shall receive the respective representation of the medal for wear. I) The State Prize (?llami D?j) is bestowed to the collectives under the decision and regulation of the Ministers Council as prescribed by their direction and judgment. J) The Red Flag Order of Labor (Munka V?r?s Z?szl? ?rdemrendje) shall be bestowed to a collective after a minimum of fifteen years of service and at least two titles of ?Professional Excellent Brigade? and at least one title of ?The Hungarian People?s Republic Excellent Brigade?. The collective must also have demonstrated outstanding work and production while living and emulating the socialist cultural ideal. In order to also maintain the integrity of the highest award possible to a collective only 10 to 15 collectives may receive this order. With the order a monetary award of 6000 HUF is awarded according to the average number of employees of the brigade over the period of the year for which the title is given. Translated from pages 93-95 of ?A Magyar N?pk?zt?rsas?g Kit?ntet?sei? K?zgazdas?gi ?s Jogi K?nyvkiad?, Budapest 1979. this is the link to the thread: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=14462
