Interesting article about the picture: The original negative is gone and it is believed that Hitler was put in later by the photographer. Has anyone here knowledge how such retouching was done and maybe finds a hint? I saw that on sale too and thought that this guy comes closest But it doesn't really fit to the confirmed one, but interesting to see that there were more pictures taken...

at least here we still know the origin of the single pieces of the group. There are so many pieces forever detached from their former owner.

Great to know the backstory to this phenomenal photo "hoch zu Ross" The only thing that made me think my photo could, with a very low chance, show a prince was the high quality tunic. But as I learned the studio in which it was taken might just have had very good props. I found that WWI one:

To dress children up in military uniforms was common in the 19th (early 20th) century. Most of this uniforms are of rather poor quality, only approximately imitating adult ones. But in this picture it seems to be a tailor made example of very good quality. The scabbard of his sword even has the usual (door induced?) dent. Could he be of noble birth, being a real army officer? I don't think so as other parts of his uniform seem to be unfitting - the woollen(?) gloves, the shoes... - and the princes I saw in military uniform did all wear real miniature uniforms. (and I actually never saw a cavalry one - if you know one please show)

Well that's what I call a piece of history! So you identified it as Leibhusaren ribbons, would be interesting how it landed on this Manteuffel Dragoner comradeship colour.

We just call them "Bayern". But you are right that many don't differentiate and also call Bavarians "Piefke". You might then get a reaction like "Schau I aus wi a Preiß", as "Preiß(n)" or "Saupreiß" is somehow the Bavarian equivalent of "Piefke"... What I can say for sure is that when Austrians think about "Piefke" they have the typical north German with his way of speaking in their head, rather than a Bavarian ?

To call the north germans jokingly (sometimes also with a real intention to insult) "Piefke" is still common and widespread. There are even 4 tv movies called the "Piefke-Saga" from the nineties that already achieved cult status in Austria.

In Austria there was (and still is...) a similar feeling. I always found this by Hugo von Hoffmannsthal very funny: (it's not anti-prussian, it makes fun of both austrians and prussians)

It looks like the Crown order he's wearing around his neck is wider than the Red Eagle order. Don't the second classes of both orders have the same width? Could it be he was awarded the 1st class and is wearing it around the neck? That would also explain the precedence.
