Hi, As best I can make out the medals are as follows: Order of the Iron Crown 3rd Class, Militar Verdienstkreuz on war ribbon, bronze Signum Laudis on red ribbon (peace time), General Service War medal, Officers Long Service Cross (probably 3rd class), Jubilee medal and Jubilee cross. There is no General Vrban in my copy of Antonio Schmidt-Brentano Austro-Hungarian Generals 1816-1918. Could he possibly be a Major? Regards, Ian

I have had these two badges in my collection for sometime and I thought I would take the opportunity to share the photos, and ask if anyone else has similar badges in their collections? I would be particularly interested in any photographic evidence of these types of badges in wear. Photo 1 is a silver coloured telegraph line supervisor for the k.u.k. military post in Bosnia-Herzegovina oval badge and measures approx. 5cm in diameter. Photo 2 is of a silver coloured oval badge for the k.u.k. Railway post telegraph and telephone supervisor and is 5cm in diameter. Regards, Ian

Alfred Herzog von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha was the Regiment-Inhaber of Infantry Regiment 84 from 1894 until 1900. So my mystery Oberst was probably serving in IR 84 in 1899 when the medal was issued.

My comments on what the photos indicate to me. Post 84 is a Feldwebel from a common army Hungarian Infantry Regiment. The stripes on his left sleeve indicate length of service, in this case a minimum of 9 years service. Post 92 is a Beamter (official) of the Gendarmerie (Oberleutnant equivalent). Regards, Ian

M Thanks for filling in the blanks for me. A little confused with his service in June/July 1917. He was invalided out due to war injuries? He then served in a Korpskommando in or near a war zone as a Oberstluetnant a.D. or d.R.? Regards, Ian

I am looking for information on Oberstleutnant Karl Budiner. He was serving with Feldjagerbatalion 6 in 1916, 1917 and possibly 1918. He is listed in the 1917 Rangliste as a Major in FJB 6, but there is no mention of him in the 1918 Rangliste. I assume he died sometime between being promoted to Oberstleutnant in late 1917 or early 1918 but before the 1918 Rangliste was complied. Regards, Ian

Your Great Grandfather is wearing the rank insignia of a Zugsführer (Section leader). His medals are as follows; Small silvery bravery with a bar indicating a 2nd award Small bronze bravery with a bar indicating a 2nd award Karl Truppen Kreuz (KTK) 1912-1913 Mobilization cross NCO’s Long service award (can’t tell which one) He is probably infantry, but I can’t tell you the Regiment. I am not even sure it is a medal ribbon. It looks like it is made of two separate pieces of cloth: blue on top of red. Perhaps it is a unit or divisional patch of some description.

Hi Bill, The cross was instituted on 13 December 1916 and awarded until the end of the end of WW Ito soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian Army, regardless of rank, who had been with a combatant unit for at least twelve weeks and who had actually served at the front. As far as I know this would include members of the K.u.K. Kreigsmarine, especially those of the U-Boat service and the Pilots and Observers of the naval aviation squadrons. Regards, Ian

I am seeking details on the wartime career of Titular Generalmajor Franz von Veith. As an Oberst he was the Kmdt. k.k. Landwehr Infantry Regiment Nr. 28 (May 1912 - Jul 1914). The 1917 Landwehr Rangliste has him listed as Oberst d.R., however he is not listed in the 1918 k.k. Landwehr Rangliste. Antonio Schmidt-Brentano’s publication (page 242) has him promoted to Titular Generalmajor on 17 November 1917. Regards, Ian
