    1. You may wish to glance at: http://www.sovmusic.ru/english/p_list.php They also have more inspirational music that many (other than you and I and ???) may wish to listen to!
    2. No, no such luck. Drinking heavily in memory of the Good Days of Soviet collecting . . . .
    3. Perhaps, "slava", perhaps. But then wouldn't you expect the "fittest" to survive?? So far, we are just guessing. Maybe Alexei will let us know, but he doesn't frequent this forum, alas. The end result, I think we can agree, is worse than tragic . . . .
    4. Thanks, Paul. Is there any evidence -- historical, artistic, or numismatic -- that it was converted for wear?
    5. More to the point, from the appearance of the 1914-15 Star and Victory Medal ribbons (and even the BWM ribbon), I suspect this is a fairly recent remounting job (1980s or later?). This is a very common thing in British collecting circles, however much the German collectors may dislike the practice.
    6. In theory, yes, but there is much unclarity over how the Garter happens. In reality, most would argue that the RVO is the only thing the "sovereign" really holds much power over. He is Scots. Born Edinburgh (though parents English), raised (by Scots) in Glasgow. Lord Blair of Texas?
    7. So true. She may be the last recipient. I have been unable so far to trace any still living in India. Rajmata Jaipur never got it (and is rather snotty toward Mountbatten on that point, at least after several drinks).
    8. I guess part of what I am asking is: -- Does the Queen like him enough to expedite the Garter (depending on how much she really controls such things), whenever there is a vacancy? She moved quickly, and moved heaven and earth, and re-wrote the rules for Thatcher, but . . . for Tony?? -- Will Blair follow the tradition of Lloyd George, MacDonald, Chamberlin, and Macmillan and decline the honour or will he gobble it up? "New Labour" sure isn't Aneurin Bevan's party!
    9. Megan's list is, of course, correct. Some orders call themselves "orders", some things that don't call themselves "orders" are effectively orders (for example the CH), and some things that call themselves "orders" aren't (for example the DSO). While no longer awarded, as some members still live (in India, not in the UK, on which all studies have oddly and deceptively focused) you can make a technical argument that The Most Exalted Order of the Star of India and The Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire are still "alive".
    10. Have you researched these? They must have interesting stories to tell. And, yes, I know what "pending" means: You should live so long!
    11. No, a good question . . . I guess . . . just that there may not be too much sympathy for These Types here.
    12. Most of us can't do so easily, Sergey. I wish we (I) could. Большинство из нас может сделать это легко, Сергей. Хочу мы (я), может.
    13. You can get his entire service record and the recommendatiosn for the GPW-era awards.
    14. So he's one of the Bad Guys? (Note the topic and theme of this sub-forum.) We need to be careful not to get led astray by the fascists and go ??
    15. What marvelous history! You have a great and wondrous duty that has been laid on you. Did the family have any of the accompanying documentation? And you really should ask for a photo that you can have copied, so you can keep this distinguished gentleman's memory alive all the better. Now, how about research on the few that are possible to reserch . . . ???
    16. So . . . 20 medals + 10 ribbons . . . OY!!
    17. Thanks "Veteran", you highlight the MANY things we have yet to learn, yet to understand! What fun.
