1) What this list is This is a list of Flak-Obersten and senior Oberstleutnants, who were at least commanders of a regiment in WW2. It was compiled from Michael Holm's great site about the Luftwaffe (http://ww2.dk/). However, Holm lists these officers by unit only and has no index. My list shows the names in alphabetical order with their known commanding posts. I have eliminated from this list those a) who eventually made General (their bios can be found in the Luftwaffe Generals' Bios Series), and those b) who were still Oberstleutnant in 1944, as they would normally have been too young for WW1 service (I am interested only in those with WW1 service, see point 2). Some might have slipped through, though, and are still included. 2) What this list might be good for Flak Colonels (Obersten der Flakartillerie) have until now been completely "invisible", as they appear neither in the Bios Series (which is only about Generals) nor in the only Luftwaffe ranklist from 1944/45. But such a list is interesting because a considerable number of young WW1 officers who were discharged in 1919/20 were recalled into Flak service as E-officers, yet cannot be found in any ranklist after WW1. 3) Cautions 1) I do NOT claim this is a complete list of ALL Flak Obersten. Listed are those - and I have some hope THESE are close to complete - who were - commanders of a Flak Regiment, Flak Scheinwerfer Regiment, Flak Ersatz Regiment, Flak Sturm Regiment, Festungs Flak Regiment, Flak Lehr Regiment or Heimat Flak Abteilung, - commanders of a Flak Brigade, - commanders of a Flak Division, - chiefs of staff of the general command of a Flakkorps, - Higher Flak commanders in a Luftkreis, - Ia officers of an air defense command (Luftverteidigungskommando), 2) I have left the dates as they appear on Holm's site. There are some conflicts in them, but I cannot resolve these here. 3) Some names appear more than once. These officers might be one and the same, but I either cannot definitely confirm this from the data, or dates of commanding posts are in conflict. Also, in some cases, the differences in names might be just spelling mistakes (ex. Hermann/Herrmann) or different versions of first names (ex. Wilhelm/Wilhelm-Friedrich). 4) I have added some WW1 services, though very few until now. Yes, I know, you posted that bar before, right? But even granted these examples exist, all those I have seen without 1864 medal are OFFICERS' bars. I would guess that some officers didn't want to have their bars crowded by too many mediocre medals. The example at the start of this thread is however an NCO's bar.

I have two favorite suspects: 1) Leutnant v. Zitzewitz (3. GaUR), 1919 Lt aD Not in Wehrmacht 1939. There is a very vague possibility for a later Major (1.1.43) in KavallerieReg 11, but there were several cavalry Zitzewitz'. So no certain trace after WW1. 2) Leutnant v. Strantz, 1919 Lt aD In 1939, he is most probably the Hauptmann (E) (1.5.34), Dipl.-Ing. in WBK Halle. Seems to have made Oberstleutnant (1.4.44) in RüstungsInsp XI (Kdo RüstBer Hannover).

Could this be narrowed down further? Consulting Pete's list of officers in Finland and crosschecking them with the Waldeck award roll, I found a couple of suspects from the 3. GaUR (and some quite interesting personalities): [Herbert Alfred?] Mumm v. Schwarzenstein (1898-1945), 1919 Lt aD -> executed as resistance fighter. But according to his bio, he studied law from 1919-21, very unlikely to also have been in Silesia at that time. Wolfgang Gans Edler Herr zu Putlitz (1899-1975), 1919 Lt aD -> a future spy for Britain, died in the GDR, but also studied directly after WW1, no Silesian involvement likely

Obviously, my short ribbon bar was a late 1918 construction where there was much confusion and unclarity regarding Finnish ribbons. But the second bar tells many things: I'm convinced that this is a junior officer of one particular regiment, the 3rd Garde-Ulanen. They were in Finland in 1918 and they had a Waldeck connection: The prince of Waldeck was à la suite of this regiment.

BUT! The seller sold another miniature chain which belonged to this bar. And he confirmed to me that both belong together. The chain consisted of the following: EK2, Hessian Bravery Medal, Waldeck 4th cl with X (!), Silesian Eagle and Finnish CoL 3rd class (!). There was also a later ribbon bar that went with it:

Got my first Waldeck ribbon bar: EK2, Hessian Bravery Medal, Waldeck (gilt swords - class unclear at first) - and last is the ribbon for the Finnish Medal of Liberty, 2nd cl. (thanks Rick!). A strange combination... officer?

I am no expert for this award, but Chambers of Commerce ("Industrie- und Handelskammern") gave awards for various kinds of merit, like promoting local business or cultural affairs, this sort of thing. I don't know if this award was maybe given to some veterans, too, for whatever merit, but it was not awarded by a veterans' organisation.

I used to have one of these cased, but sold it (see below). As Christian said, it is not a Veteran piece, but a Chamber of Commerce award for merit in the industry. BTW, this should be moved to the Weimar forum.

Wow, this is a very nice Freikorps ribbon bar! #2: Baltic Cross Can't see the color of #3 very good, is it black with white stripes? Then it is the medal of the Iron Division, quite rare on a ribbon bar. See photo below: #4: looks like Schwarzburg

Gentlemen, a considerable amount of our ID research is based on the 1924 Reichsheer ranklist. We usually take for granted that those putting together and proof-reading the ranklists had to be - being German - very accurate! However, especially Rick already pointed to some errors. Now I wanted to know how good the list really is: I compared award entries on five pages to those in the 1932 RL, presuming, of course, that errors had been corrected by then and no new ones inserted! This is just a small sample, and I only compared a couple of random entries, but the result is staggering: Twelve major mistakes on five pages: p. 141: Hptm Glokke, missing a Hamburg Hanseatic Cross Hptm Förster, missing a Saxe-Meiningen Cross p. 144: Hptm Brosch, erroneously given a LS Hptm Behschnitt, ?R2K should read ?R4K p. 145: Hptm Heinrici, missing a Saxe-Coburg medalX Hptm v. Kleist, missing a Life-Saving medal (THIS one might have been awarded later) Hptm v.
