When M.S. Gorbachev last visited France as Soviet President, he brought with him a unique and unusual gift.

    1) What was that gift?

    2) To whom was it presented?

    Dear Marc,

that visit took place in Latch?, the country-residence of President Mitterand, end of October 1991 - AFTER the "Patriotic Action" of August 1991.

TV-interview with Gorbachev made at that time in Latch?:

Well, I couldn't find any informations about that gift ..... :(

    Best regards

    Guys, guys, guys!

Let's widen our horizons here. Two attempts, and Mitterand mentioned each time...

OK, one more hint: it is an historical artefact.

While we are (all ?) searching for the answer to Marc's challenge, here is an update in photos to what is happening to the Moskva Hotel in Moscow.

I have taken these pics yesterday in Moscow.

    Cheers.

I have no precise idea... Could it be linked to Napoleon ?

    Christophe,

Good thinking, but no, it is 100% Soviet focused.

OK, I'll drop a few clues:

. It is an item that is used for something that most Eastern Europeans consider to be a sport

. It belonged to a prominent Soviet

Random guess here (I mean, really random). Something chess related?

    A hunting rifle or shotgun?

    Now we are talking

Oh, good :jumping: That helps a little. Can we get some more hints, like:

    1. Was the item directly related to chess (a board, clock, pieces)?

    2. Did it belong to a prominent soviet chess player, or just a prominent soviet?

    Hi to all,

It's very calm, here :( . Marc, can you provide more hints or reply to RedMaestro ?

    Cheers.

    OK guys, some hints:

. We are indeed talking about chess

. The owner of the chess artifact was a PROMINENT (note the emphasis) Soviet, but not as a chess player

    Hi Marc,

Would it be a chess game having being owned by Lenin, offered to Fran?ois Mitterrand by Mikhail Gorbachev ?

    Cheers.

    Ch.

    Christophe,

You are definitely on the right track here. It is indeed Lenin's chess board. Now, we need to find the actual recipient of this wunderbar gift

Has this gift been presented to Fran?ois Mitterrand ?

If yes, it should be located in the Mitterrand museum in Jarnac (place where he was born).

    Christophe,

You already suggested Fran?ois Mitterand earlier; had he been the recipient, you'd already won this round...

Frankly, I guessed more than I knew...

What are the sources you got about this ? Was this chess board of Lenin part of the former Lenin museum of Paris ?

    Cheers.

    Dear Christophe,

I saved the photograph of the airforce officer with the Lenin, blew it up, printed it out and compared the portrait to the pictures in my books about Soviet fighter aces and Soviet aircraft constructors - result negative :( .

Well, I have a rather comprehensive library about Soviet aviation (in English and German language) ....

Maybe our officer hadn't been directly engaged with pure aviation  ?

Maybe he worked on rockets, missiles or something else  ?

    Best regards
