Ed_Haynes Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 As I muddle through, getting things catalogued, I sometimes (too often) need help. From a nice cased medal (thanks, Charles!!) I need a translation:
decker Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 (edited) Not an interesting article... but here's the translation:(I hope my english was not too poor...)"Ernő Nagy, awardee of 'Order for the Socialist Homeland', who had been a member of the (Hungarian Socialist Workers') Party since 1928, died at the age of 74. The cremation and the Memorial event afterwards will take place in the Pesterzs?bet Cemetery on the 20th of September at 3pm. - XX. District Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party" Edited January 12, 2009 by decker
Ed_Haynes Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 (edited) Many thanks. When it is all the documentation you have on his awards you are, still, very happy! His (only?) medal: Edited January 12, 2009 by Ed_Haynes
Ulsterman Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 very cool! wonderful to have a nice piece that has a direct link with a man long gone.
Ed_Haynes Posted January 13, 2009 Author Posted January 13, 2009 Yes. Just wish there'd been some date on the tiny newspaper clip. But, with these, any link we can get is a great deal.
Gordon Craig Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Ed,I did a couple of quick searches on the name but nothing useful came up. Both names are much too common here in Hungary to have hoped for much without more information and no date on the newspaper clipping.A quick look at the Blue Bible seems to indicate that the award itself was introduced by the Presidents Council order #29 in 1966. It was first awarded on May 1, 1967 and a total of 9516 were awarded. Perhaps Charles can add some more.Regards,Gordon
Ulsterman Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Jeepers, how many "old party comrades" can there have been left in 1968 +?Makes you wonder if he was given it as a long service award for adhering to the party through the long and dangerous years.
hunyadi Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Yes - this one was one of the more rare to be awarded. It was primarily an award for those who had remained faithful to the cause of the Hungarian Communist Party (Later the Hungarian Workers Party) durung the years of trubulation in WW2, the "White Terror", etc... it guaranteed a massive bonus to ones pension along with a guarantee of housing and other benfits
