heusy68 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 (edited) Hello Gentlemen,I always regerts that there is not that much activities on the Africa section. So here I will try to entertain you with the National Order of Burkina Faso (ex Upper Volta). This country had an awards system of its own from 1960 till Captain Thomas Sankara took power by a Coup d'Etat in 1983 and changed the name of the country to Burkina Faso ,which means : "the country of the perfectly honest men". Thomas Sankara has developped a serie of Order in a revolutionary style. They were 4 : The Order of the Star of Nahouri (you will see a commandor below) (upper left),and here you see the breast star of the Order of the Star of Nahouri, the Order of the Torch of the Revolution (upper right corner),The Order of Labour (lower left corner) and the Order of Red Star of the Resistence (lower right corner). On the Order of Labor you can read : "La Patrie ou la Mort, Nous Vainquerons" = " Fatherland or Death,we will defeat". These 4 Orders are on display on the Museum of the Legion of Honour in Paris. Thomas Sankara was assasinated in 1987. Emmanuel Edited February 3, 2011 by heusy68
heusy68 Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 In 1993 there was a reform in the award system of Burkina Faso, and all the former "revolutionnnary Orders" were decalred obsolete. They were replaced by a large serie of Order and medals. Former members of these so called revolutionnary Orders could exchange them and take place in the newly instituted Orders. Mainly the new senior Order of Burkina Faso is : National Order of Burkina Faso. It comprise a Collar for the Grand Master and then Grand Cross,Grand Officer,Commander,Officer & Knight. Here you can see a picture of a Grand Cross breast star and an officer with its reverse The Officer has this unique specificity to have a gilded circle inside the rosette + a gilded star in the middle of the rosette. For Knight grade there is a single gilt rosette in the middle of the ribbon (where red meets green). Emmanuel
heusy68 Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 Here you can see President Blaise Compaore during the Investiture Ceremony, where he's wearing the Collar of the National Order. Emmanuel
Paul R Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Thank you for sharing this rare and beautiful display.
heusy68 Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 The second Order instituted after the revision of 1993 was the Order of Merit Burkinabe,or Order of Merit. It awarded for reward less higher merit and always in the lower class with a bar on ribbon saying for which kind of merit the Order was attributed. The Order exist in 5 ranks : Grand Cross,Grand Officer,Commander,Officer & Knight. We know that at least the follwing casp exist : Amitie-Cooperation (friendship & cooperation) , Education , Action Sociale , Administration , Agriculture et Elevage , Santé (health) , Défense , Sécurité On the National Day of Burkina Faso in december 2003 : 1 Grand Officer,3 Commander,5 Officer & 152 Knight of the Order of Merit Burkinabe were awarded. Burkina Faso is one of the few african country who regard his medals as strong national symbol and they give many every year (they not only givve the award document like in some poor country, but they give the medal too). Here you can see the Order of Merit ; rank of Officer with bar "Amitié-Coopération" awarded to the representant of "Ile de Paix" .It's well known charity organisation that gather money for small projet in Africa.Mostly to make people to get water. You can see that this person was also awarded a second medal of Burkina Faso : the Medal of Merit of Local Collectivity.
