ladybird Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 Front page news, our local paper ...No place for war veteran Freddie Johnson, 91, at unveiling of Bomber Command memorial http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/ See also editors article on yorkshire hero's
Brian Wolfe Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 This is a disgrace and if they get a move on there is still time to set it right before the unveiling. Let us hope they do so. Regards Brian
Hauptmann Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 This is a shame, but after reading it through they said they are limited in the number of people who can attend... there can be a number of reasons for this. They said they've tried to limit it to surviving crew members and families of those crew members who gave their lives in service. But you would think that someone as involved in trying to get funding for this would have been invited straight off. In a perfect world... which sadly this is not. I pray he'll get to go to at least one if not several of the other events that are planned. A very brave man! Dan
paul wood Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 I suspect there will be several bigwigs both governmental and MOD who have never seen a shot fired in anger, would be nice if one of them gave up their place for him but hey there's more chance of Greece paying off their debts. Paul
Pylon1357 Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 An update to this, Mr. Johnson and his wife will be attending the event. It would seem the 'powers that be' caved in at the overwhelming outcry of anger from across many Nations. http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/9754774.War_hero_Freddie_Johnson__91__can_go_to_memorial_ceremony_in_London_after_all/
makedon Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 Sad situation, but the example of Greece is rather unfortunate, dear Paul.
paul wood Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 Makedon, No offence meant, perhaps I should have said as likely as England winning the European Championships (even less likely than my previous allusion). Paul
