bigjarofwasps Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Hi Gents, Just stumbled across this...... has anyone got any opinions on why it`s only appears to be for US personal? The full criteria is on wiki, but for some reason this site won`t allow me to add a link? Check it out and let me know what you think. Gordon.
bigjarofwasps Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 Just found this......Appears we can have one, to. But that any country wishing to bestow it on it`s troops have to produce it themselves? What`s all that about?
bigjarofwasps Posted August 14, 2014 Author Posted August 14, 2014 Since I posted the above threads, I`ve done a little more digging and it appears that this medal runs the risk of fading into obscurity. It does appear that very few people know about it. To that end I have created a Facebook page for it, if only to spread the word and educate people about it`s pending existence. I`d be grateful to anyone with a FB profile to pay it a visit and `like` my page. I think it would be a real shame if this medal was to be just simply forgotten about.
Paul R Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 I dont think that this was ever created/issued. I have never seen any evidence or heard of these medals being produced.
bigjarofwasps Posted August 15, 2014 Author Posted August 15, 2014 I fear you may well be right. The most recent thing I can find on the net is for last year were the US D.O.D were still considering the idea. The main stumbling block appears to be who`ll produce them, Iraq isn`t really in a position to do so and other countries appear reluctant to fork out for it. Time will tell I suppose................
Paul R Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 I doubt it will happen, especially based upon what is going on there now. We(the US) left too early and I think that they will not forgive us for it.
bigjarofwasps Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 Paul, we'll ALL be back there very soon, we can make it up to them then
bigjarofwasps Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 Found this on another forum, thought it might be of interest? RobW Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 To all,Found this on another forum, thought it might be of interest? It appears that the medal is being produced? http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/232167-an-example-of-the-iraq-commitment-medal/It appears that the picture links didn't come through. I have attached a consolidated picture accordingly. This item is already listed on ebay so collectors could also find it there (auction no: 221698116084).Regards,Rob
nickstrenk Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 I hope this medal belongs to the topic.Probably somebody has some more info. The signature in the sertificate is of the Polish General.
bigjarofwasps Posted July 13, 2018 Author Posted July 13, 2018 Did anything ever become of this medal?
Brig Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 No, and it most likely will not happen. There was a single presentation to (at the time) Vice President Joe Biden It is my understanding that there are two criteria for the US to accept a foreign award 1) The medal cannot be strictly for foreign troops, but must also be a decoration for those of the presenting country's troops who partook in the campaign. 2) Initial issue has to be made by the awarding government. Once that happens, the US will authorize it be produced by US firms and sold in the PX, etc, for troops to buy as replacements, or for higher quality strikes that conform to US regulations. (It is not uncommon for other countries to have different width ribbons) Incidentally, Afghanistan also authorized a medal that never materialized.
bigjarofwasps Posted August 7, 2019 Author Posted August 7, 2019 (edited) Saw this earlier on another platform, thought it might be of interest? Noticed the medal ribbon is slightly different. But it is reported to be to DOD specs? Although authorisation for wear is still pending it seems. This would be a step in the right direction as the Iraqi's originally said "we" were to produce it ourselves and issue it to our troops. Edited August 10, 2019 by bigjarofwasps

Brig Posted August 31, 2019 Posted August 31, 2019 DOD allows horizontal stripes on ribbons...USN/USMC PUC is a prime example I doubt this is ever going to come to fruition
ostprussenmann_new Posted August 31, 2019 Posted August 31, 2019 As previously stated, neither the Afghan Medal nor the Iraq medal will not be awarded to US Soldiers. Grandpa Jo got one, some very senior leaders, and some troops present did within the US (like 15 total). Iraq is in such turmoil as is Afghanistan, and of it is ever authorized those who served will get it when we are old and crusty.
Brig Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 It's my understanding that no one actually got a medal, Biden got a planchet/medallion and the ribbon was never even produced in prototype beyond the artwork
Brig Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 (edited) And someone's selling cheap churned out replicas of the above proposal on eBay now... Iraqi Commitment Medal Edited January 12, 2020 by Brig
bigjarofwasps Posted January 28, 2020 Author Posted January 28, 2020 On 28 January 2020 the Government of Nicaragua officially accepted the Iraq Commitment Medal for retention by their military recipients who qualified for the medal for wear on their military uniform.
