JapanX Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 (edited) Strangely enough no Legion of Merit on this one Guess it is later anti-american version Edited July 29, 2013 by JapanX
Herman Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Hello, great info and a great string.... I read somewhere that a few Red Army members were awarded a US Purple Heart. 3 i think. Any pictures or names to attach to those medals?
utopis Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Hm I think in this case the legion of merit isn't the greatest beauty on this photograph <-
JapanX Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I read somewhere that a few Red Army members were awarded a US Purple Heart. 3 i think. Any pictures or names to attach to those medals? Unfortunately no names and no photos Herman. Actually this is the very first time I heard about "purple hearts for soviets". I guess there are some theoretical possibilities of such awardings before September 22, 1943 when hearts stoped being awarded for "meritorious performance of duty". But after 1943 it was strictly "for wounds received in action against the enemy" award ... The only time I saw PH on the chest of ex soviet soldier ... Famous "soldier of two armies" Joseph Beyrle and his son (US ambassador) on Red Square
JapanX Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Amazing story http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Beyrle Together with PPSH
Herman Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Japan X, I read it in an old OMSA article. 3 PH's were awarded 'by mistake??' to soviet army personell.
JapanX Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I guess this the same article that was mentioned in the first post of this thread? Any "coordinates" Herman?
Herman Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Correct, same article. They were awarded by the US Military Mission in Moscow during WW2.
JapanX Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Navy time I believe this is the very first cavalier of Navy Distinguished Service Medal in this thread. Unfortunately unidentified ... Only the year is known - 1943
JapanX Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Rear-admiral Donald Bradley Duncan in the process of awarding Navy Cross to HSU captain of the 2nd rank Gurin A.I. 1943
JapanX Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Two (unfortunately) unidentified cavaliers of Legion
Ferdinand Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 That second one is Ivan Ivanovich Lyudnikov. His Wikipedia page has the same photo, but in higher quality: http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9B%D1%8E%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%B2,_%D0%98%D0%B2%D0%B0%D0%BD_%D0%98%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%B8%D1%87
