... exactly, SB 5 Flammenwerfer personnel wore their Totenkopf at the same level on the sleeve as the other SB 5 Grenadiers wore their crown (Rohr) badge. Uniformity. Makes sense and explains the difference in wear compared to GRP Flammenwerfer personnel

One of the best threads in a while, thanks everyone! In: Aufbau und Verwendung der deutschen Sturmbataillone im Weltkrieg; by Hellmuth Gruss (1939) Gruss writes that the Grenadiers of SB 5 were authorized to wear a crown patch on the left lower arm. Does anyone have pictures of it in wear?

Zimmermann has a very clear shoulder strap - perhaps a large scan of the strap would help.

Well, I went ahead and did it. I used existing holes and put the crown and pips on the old shadows - No new holes were added. Thanks guys, it appears to be an altered board. I lifted the cypher and noticed that there is an imprint of the crown underneath. It looks like the crown was moved up and the FR cypher added. Also the pips were moved apart. Here is the question: Since it has been clearly altered recently, should I restore it back to it's original configuration? Leibgrenadier-Regiment Nr.109

Have a look at the Parade of the Kavallerie vets in 1937 - lots of pre 1910 uniforms are worn with their old rank and unit destination. I believe that a lot of the oddities we see are from that era http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1M4V-y7cIc
