    1. From what I see the ring was removed to sew it directly to the ribbon. it seems there was a pin of some sort, but no longer there....
    2. How comman is it to have both. I know of a group recently sold to a panzer soldier who was killed in an accident in spain. In the group were docs and crosses, including a Bronze cross with swords AND a relatives cross. I did not know BOTH were awarded for one soldier ??
    3. http://portal.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jh.../ixnewstop.html I think there was an SAS group for sale (most highly decorated etc. etc) to help the ex soldier pay for an operation not so long ago.
    4. why destroy the poor mans dreams !! In his mind he had probably already spent the money ;-)
    5. What makes it a very rare combination, other than the fact that the first and 3rd medal are for fighting the British, is that the first medal is the DTD, it is the boer distinguished service medal for officers. almost all Boer war units were irregular, and when the commandos reformed for the campaign in German South West Africa, most Boers who volunteered on the govt. side served once again as officers. i.e. A farmer who had served in the Boer war as an officer in the Kroonstadt commando, rejoined the same commando as an officer in 1914 (usually). Commandos being the name for irregular units a the time. Jordaan however had served as an officer in the Boer war, then joined the newly created regular army as an NCO after the boer war, his service as an irregular Lt. not qualifying him for officer rank. So... while a number of DTD winners also had a DSO, or MC, only 2 or 3 had a DTD-DCM combination (for those who do not collect Brit stuff, a DCM is an enlisted mans decoration) because it meant serving as an officer, then as an enlisted man.
    6. Hi, From a book written by his CO after the Boer war. Jordaan was one of the small group of men that went into the Cape province to raid and raise the cape Boers to rebellion. I will do a longer write up about it when I finally get some time. Best Chris
    7. I have a loose Victoria Cross ribbon... Rick, if you have a loose cross laying around... could you whip it my way?
    8. ahhhh...Ed... you are showing your age !!! No MTV I guess tATu are indeed nubile.... I prefer a good corn fed country girls, but the young Moscow metro teenie look has many a (just) post pubescent male saying "I'd have a bit of that!!"
    9. Celebrating? I thought they were clapping along to a nifty tune of some sort, the looks of concentration point to this. Something along the lines of "Hava Nagila" sung by tATu. These skimpely clad, nubile young russian pseudo lesbians can be seen in the desktop computer screens doing their song to a pulsing Euro Techno Pop beat, hence the concentrated looks by these dirty old men. So....... ...what have I won ???
    10. Hi, apparently it is zink. It is not round but comes to a slightly pointy shape at the top and is mounted on a bow of some sort. Will be able to supply better details soon.
    11. the Secol A-S system is THE best. Costs about USD 1 a sheet. The top one on the page is the bees knees. http://www.conservus.ch/webexplorer.cfm?id...=1?id=63&tlid=1 It is a Brit company and is usually used by museums, private buyers seldom buy them. Polyester is the only way to go, but there are different kinds of polyester, different qualities. I did not buy the special binders, that would be going overboard, but I have some really big office binders. The sheets above will take an A4 doc with space to spare. There are even bigger ones.
    12. I have just been offered a cased red cross medal 3rd class with the cardboard overcase saying "ony to be opened by the awardee"... Have not seen it yet... what should I look for? Any ideas? I guess the case and overcase is much more intresting than tzhe medal itself? Thanks Chris
    13. I am trying to figure out what the wifes grandfather is wearing here... could a Luftwaffe collector help? Thanks Chris http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=3523...883entry36883
    14. I am not sure what is being worn here. EK1, he does not yet have his clasp to the EK1. one of the badges must be the NSFK glider badge... and the other? I know he had a license for small aircraft, when in the Luftwaffe he had a flight book for towing gliders and he did a little flying around in it to places... Maybe a Luftwaffe pilots badge? NSFK motor pilots badge? any ideas? Thanks Chris
    15. From the little I understand... the leistungs badge was an international award, he was 387th person to get it. the NSFK one replaced it? Or something like that. Best Chris
    16. Apparently the glider badges they had back then (one gull, two gulls, 3 gulls etc) are nowdays out of date. With modern gliders folks would get the higher levels right away.
    17. No MC or DSO, but this was from the Light Brigades field artillery battery. They fired the first shots of the crimean war and actually tried to take part in the charge, but because of the tarrain they had to give it up...
