That one is indeed nice! For the moment I dont think there is any way of knowing for sure if WW1 or between the wars, simply because we cannot compare them to anything official (WW1 issue items, things to pack in Tornister etc) From what i understand, they were private purchase items, for whatever rank, but tailored to fit the messtin... but I dont think officers had a messtin... (The messtin theory I think must be right as the WW2 ones fit in the WW2 messtin.) The one I have had all disgusting rests of grease, polish and soap, and a fossilized Prussian crown button in one of the little metal boxes with what looked like a hard ball of earwax. Those are cool pics!! Mine is half complete then...

So if you served from 1914 but were invalided out for loosing 2 legs in 1917 you dont get it... bummer...

Hi, Apparently they were made to fit into the messtim, so the soldier could save space in his backpack for sweeties... actually I can see the advantage, it uses what would otherwise be wasted space....

I was not sure what it was when I saw it... and a friend told me it fits in the messtin... me being an idiot I grabbed a WW2 Messtin... of course it did not fit... so I almost did not buy it... then he told me to try a WW1 tim (I forgot they were bigger... Perfect fit. I have never seen one before... So i am a happy boy...

Hi, Possibly, but not 100%... I have a group to a WW1 Assistenzarzt who had just an EK2. Flip to my wifes Great Grandfather who was Doctor, and very active in various organisations, Died as Divisionsarzt of the 6th Luftwaffe felddvision, the only medical decoration he got more than this was the Volkspfelge cross 1. Stufe, but a Doctor who was Lt. d.R. would not have had that. So a young Prussian Doctor, Civilian Landarzt, no real engagement in organisations would have about this? If he was lucky a missing EK1.

At the La Gleize show this weekend there were collectors with the theory that the new Tchech haul are actually papiergarn covers for Glass bottles, and they are being sold with metal bottles. A couple of my thoughts to that... 1) I spoke to one of the sources at La Gleize this weekend, and saw some pics of the hoard... I have little doubt these were found under the circumstances he said... I cant "Know"... but I think... 2) Even if the Covers were made with glass bottles in mind.... if in the stores there were these covers, and no glass bottles... would they not have used them? 3) My pet theory, seeing the huge amount of different bottles kinds of metal bottles in the covers... some looking used... that these may actually have been in the local supply/Maintenance stores... exchanging damaged linen and cord covers for new Paper cloth ones. We all have cloth covered bottles that could really have used a new cover... so why not? By belief is that these may have been made for Glass bottles, but from the information I saw at La Gleize, I think it certain that metal bottles were put in them back in 1918 for shortage of material reasons, or as replacement covers. We are talking about a relatively large find... It is very unlikely that someone went around buying bottles, removing the covers they had, then putting on new ones...

Tony found out he was in the Cheshire regiment when he was killed... during the kaiser schlacht, killed on the 28th March 1918 during the German offensive, no known Grave...He was 19 at the time...
