    1. As long as people are arrested for POSESSING AND WEARING medals and using such medals to perpetrate a LIE and DECEIVE others as well as STEAL valour that has not been EARNED, then the Stolen Valour Act has done something good and is a positive and welcome act. If on the other hand its just there as a KILLJOY for genuine collectors who in good faith want to OWN, RESEARCH, RESPECT and TREASURE orders decorations and medals, then its just an utter and total waste of American taxpayers' money and becomes in brief totally pointless. We need to see which of the above this act will really serve... will it punish LIARS or COLLECTORS? .... I am sympathetic to US collectors, but more importantly, (and this concerns me) how will other countries will react or keep on reacting to cases of GENUINE STOLEN VALOUR as opposed to GENUINE PHALERISTICS. I'd say so far so good...... no? Jim
    2. I would if it worked.... It does not seem to work from my computer Jim
    3. This thread may be of interest to you! http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=17351 Regards, Jim
    4. I've had my hands on a Nevsky which had cetain easy to identify as a fake features on the medallion once you are aware of them - perfect gilding. I've also recently seen a batch of three Nevsky's at a reasonable price which I turned down (at a somewhat reputable numismatic gallery). The medallion and reverse were totally convincing..... and yet, the gilding left somewhat to be desired. Between the impeccable medallion on 3 of them and the impeccable gilding on the other one, be very wary! I had forgotten my pen black lighter so I cannot comment on that front! However I have no doubt they would all have turned yellow! My thoughts anyways! Jim
    5. Thanks for the posts Andy. They got larger with each post! I am not at all familiar with these awards. Could you provide some background info/history or links with more info about them pls. Regards Jim
    6. Hi Andy and Paul! Welcome to this sub forum in GMIC!! Andy, can I encourage you to post larger pics of your medals including close ups of obverse, reverse and cases. Feel free to post one image per post to give as detailed a pic as possible. Regards! Jim
    7. Without shadow of doubt a fake! You can check the fake threads and you'll probably see that similar orders have been posted there. If possible post queries regarding dubious items in the soviet fake section to give the Gerd and Rick less work when sorting out what goes in which section .... and to keep threads about seperating the gold from the sand together! Jim
    8. Hey tiger, Any pics of the midget submarines themselves or similar ones. Curious to see what these looked like and get an idea of dimensions etc... Jim
    9. For those of you following this thread may I post a link to: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18242&st=0 where there is a group of items relevant to this thread! Any info that anyone can churn up will be appreciated. Jim
    10. I apologise for any delays in posting the uniforms and photos that I promised I would but these were boxed away many years ago and its easier saying that one will find them than actually finding them. My efforts to find and photograph them will be renewed. In the meantime if anyone else has some more info on the gentlemen in question please post. Jim
    11. To think that these people once fought in a war to free the world (as it was then) of tyranny and opression!! ...... What a shame that nothing is sacred to some, not even putting one's life at risk in the line of duty! But glad to hear that the medals have now been re-united with their rightful owner!!!! Jim
    12. Thanks! They mean alot to me and I'd really love to have more info about them. I'll try to get th erest of the stuff posted by next week. Jim
    13. To be more precise I believe that he did not just receive an OBE but a CBE ..... that's from the ribbon on the pic as I see it ....... and I stand to be corrected. For those of you who may want to take a look at his award card you can check http://rusawards.ru/ussr/ordena/006%20yshakov/kavalery.htm To answer question 1: The Danube flottilla distinguished itself in the last push in the Vienna Operation. On March 20, defying fierce enemy fire, the ships and craft forced their way upstream to land a marine battalion not far from Tata behind the enemy's lines. The descent had a tough time. In four days it beat off 18 assaults but held its ground firmly till our Army units arrived. On April 13, Vienna was cleared of the Nazis. The Danubian Naval Flotilla was awarded the Order of Kutuzov, 2nd Class, for its part in the Vienna Operation. This was not the first award it was honoured with. It was cited 11 times in the Supreme Commander-in-Chiefs Orders of the Day for successful action in the offensive on the southern flank of the Soviet-German Front. The flotilla was awarded the Order of the Red Banner, Order of Nakhimov, 1st Class, and Order of Kutuzov, 2nd Class. Seven thousand officers and men were honoured with government awards. I would dare guess that Montgomery made the award ..... I cannot find anything to this effect ..... so I would also guess that Zhukov would have loved to have received that medal. But this is all conjecture on my end. Jim
    14. As a small deviation from the original topic, I would also love to find some info about Gefreiter Johann Tisch, 5./Gren Regt 849 (as at November 1943) and also if possible some information about his wife whose name I do not have but who was German and was supposedly attached to some German top brass. A close up of the "stamp damage" has been posted in the preservation section: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18349&hl=
    15. I'll post this on the personal research thread to but here's what happens when you're awarded a wound badge and are too eager to write home to your wife!!! Of course it would be lovely to seperate the two but in doing so, the document (and the stamps) risk irreperable damage! In any case, I am sure the stamps have been fixed to that certificate very soon after it was awarded!!! Anyone got other interesting docs that sufferred similar "damage"? Jim
    16. Thanks Kev. This man was not a high ranking officer - How easy it is to find details about his regiments and its history?
    17. Well... we agree that there are a great many of them in any case I am glad we got this thread going as a lot of info has been gathered here. In many ways I am disappointed to have sold off the bulk of my collection of these patches. However I take comfort in the fact that they were just a sideline collection that had to make way for my main area of collecting. Jim
    18. To think that if guages like that packed in, the sub would be in for a load of trouble to say the least! Very interesting indeed! Jim
    19. As for rank.... We have "Kanonier" / "Bedienungs - Kanonier", "Vorm", "Unteroffizier" and "Waff. Oberrwm". We also have collar tabs for Feldwebel and Oberfeldwebel...... not sure about the epualettes. But what is the proper sequence? We have I/s.A.R. Batterie 1 - Is that artillery? Can anyone tell me what happenned to that unit pre anschluss and once it was integrated into the german army? I also have a few photos that need to be dug up from my files. I will also post these maybe someone can throw more info my way! Jim
    20. I have finally posted these tram tickets on: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=1824...mp;#entry176386 Jim
    21. And again another close up. Form the stops/stations on the ticket, can anyone say where this ticket comes from?
