    1. it there was a backing plate on the single post examples, it stands to reason that the double-post examples also came with them. this cross is currently for sale on ebay.de
    2. very nice! i have two of these-one is with the case- and am still hoping to find the clasp some day.
    3. joe- i agree! chris- it's prolly a wagner; i wouldn't be surprised if there was a tiny 'ws' stamp near the former catch area under all of that tarnish/grime
    4. screwdisc handle sticks waaay out. henceforth the 'outer clothing theory' p.s. the two frames were separated, and a layer of solder was sandwiched between them, creating a much thicker frame than ordinary. you can see a bit of separation occurring
    5. rather sloppily done, but it's not going to fall apart anytime soon. very sturdy
    6. disassembled. cruciform backing plate is slightly vaulted
    7. very heavy brass fittings
    8. here's a cross that has seen much use. based on the substantial added hardware, i'd venture to guess that the wearer used it on a piece of heavy outerwear, such as a leather coat or heavy wool coat. the fine pin and catch system was replaced with a heavy and bulky attachment system
    9. i thought this was for an artillery sergeant's-major?
    10. nice one! ...and nice to see an item from this maker, too
    11. formally known as the 'deutsch-bekenntnis-kreuz der allgemeinen deutsch volksgemeinschaft'...a fairly scarce award. this particular example includes a contemporary but incorrect ribbon. perhaps someday i will encounter a piece of the proper ribbon to include with this item
    12. let's not forget about willy's tendency towards megalomania...
    13. i like it-- i have several examples on medal bars that also include hindenburg crosses or other postwar commemorative awards, etc. as greg states, no definite known maker
    14. somewhere i have a bottle of the fabled north african "rommel rum"...now i will have to keep an eye out for it!
    15. hiya brian, thanks for the additional views. you are probably right about the small mark on the ring, which is most likely a period repair that has been very neatly done. one can see the tab for the original suspension ring in there. this seems to have been a frequently worn example, and the owner wanted to avoid any recurring mishaps which could result in the loss of his cross. again, nice item. i like these types of period-altered crosses! p.s. it would behoove you to apply a cuetip and some water (or even better: boeshield t-9) to that core in order to remove some of the crud and prevent further oxidation
    16. that's a nice one. any idea yet about the purported mark? is there one on that large ring-- a tiny square, perhaps?
    17. i don't mean to be alarmist or anything, but another aspect of this cross needs to bear scrutiny. one needs to determine whether or not the tarnish is period or chemically induced. p.s. the weird clean spots on the remaining tarnished areas could have come from a spray, or could have occurred when the cross was repaired. the spots could have been a result from the heating of the frame
    18. reverse
