    1. Thankyou BJofW - to answer your earlier question about medals - I would think this has to be a contender. Personally, I like it - it shows Her character , and Her sense of humour, with the slight smile. A fitting tribute to Her services to a grateful Country. Mervyn
    2. Very interesting set of early badges and some excellent photos of the period. Thankyou for showing them - I imagine the badges would attract a high price ? Mervyn
    3. The Springbok head is marked SAI for South African Infantry. I think you will find that the Transvaal Helmet Plate is nickel - at least I remember them being so from the examples I have handled. They were only in existence for a few years and took over from the South African Constabulary in 1908 - they became part of the new South African Constabulary in 1912. They must not be confused with the Transvaal Town Police who policed the Jo'burg, Pretoria and Witwatersrand areas from 1902 to 1908 and came under the S.A.Constabulary. Mervyn
    4. Our new sales section is intended to get to the prospective buyers. Post them there. Mervyn
    5. David - these would be better placed on the new saleroom section. I will leave you to re-post and will then delete these. Mervyn
    6. A nice collection to a rare unit. I had a number come into the shop over the years - but, always they were limited and quite valuable. As you will know the pilots flew their own planes and I remember one old chap telling me how he had fitted a pipe between his legs which went out through a hole cut in the fuselage - when over targets he would pull the pin on hand grenades and drop them down the tube.............. I have never seen the Matabeleland Air Wing - must be very rare. Mervyn
    7. Rick is the required top piece a spike or a ball ? Mervyn
    8. Col.Dudley Wall has written a series of books on UDI and earlier Rhodesian units. He shows all equipment worn - including buttons. Well worth having copies. Let me know if you need ref. numbers.? Mervyn (He was Rhodesian Forces and later SADF - as Col. in Intell.)
    9. Rick 64 - welcome to GMIC. One of our Members may perhaps be able to help you - failing that, contact some of the larger dealers. Mervyn
    10. An interesting topic - and although the question is based on the Police it is quite pertinent that the army dismissals were considered. The Devon Pte. England who was re-instated as a Lt. Col. made fascinating reading and showed the meanness of the pensions awarded - I congratulate you Gunner1 for research and making the story so readable. Mervyn
    11. Hi Zeb. Thankyou for the up-date. I expect the Commissioner will soon be running things from his lounge.........
    12. pt09ps - thankyou for your comment - which brings clarity to this issue. We have an active British Police Forum + one for overseas Police. I hope you will join us with some posts on your experiences. Mervyn
    13. This story was way back in 2013 . I haven't heard or, seen any reports - has the Yard been moved ? Please can someone up-date on the latest changes. Mervyn
    14. I would say the more likely explanation is that they have taken a later tunic and restitched the cuffs - possibly for a theatre production. Mervyn
    15. Hugh - a fascinating story of an almost forgotten part of the early war. I do hope further information will turn-up. Mervyn
    16. He was probably awarded the MID during the France and Germany campaign and thought it should go there. Mervyn
    17. Be honest Mickey - you're hoping to find the five bars ? Mervyn
    18. Quite a neat little display item - ideal for a window or stand. Mervyn
    19. Timo - Brett's advice on research is very good - and well worth the effort. There is something wrong with the report that says he 'fell out of the aircraft' ? They were strapped in and I can't think of many times that the pilot or navigator would just - 'fall out'. Perhaps if he was standing to clear a Lewis Gun action , or, to deal with an emergency there would be a risk in rough weather. The other alternative would be he jumped ? The papers should have the official enquiry reports and I think we will all be interested to learn the reason. Mervyn
    20. Sham - go to page 6 - there is an interesting article on the Grenadier Guards by Leigh Kitchen. This may help with your dates. Mervyn
    21. Brian - a very insightful article - and the sort of advice and guidance that the older, experienced members, should be giving to the new collectors. We all know from our own experience that some pieces can rightly be called 'investment items' - however, the great majority on the market are collectables. These will appreciate and give pleasure to the collector - however, very few are worth a really great value. Keep-up the good work. Mervyn
    22. BJofW - are you referring to the Roll of Honour created a few years back by the stage star ? If so, then that is very accurate having had access to all records back to 1829. There is a memorial in London with all of the names and date listed. I think it numbers around 200 (?) so quite moderate compared with some countries. Mervyn
