What's even better, I got to meet up with a fellow forum member in UB who is also the author of a great recent book on Mongolian awards. More on that later, as he was able to show me some real treasures!, but he also found another photo of Sorkin in his own collection. Caption below photograph in book: "Some commanders of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary army with a group of Red Army instructors. From left to right: 1st in the 1st row-Chief of General Staff MPRA V.A. Kangelara, 4th in the same row-Chief Inspector of the MPRA Kh. Some pics from the mentioned museum (i'll spare you the room with skulls with bullet holes...). Sorkin had interesting "friends" in high places... First the museum, the former house of Peljidiin Genden who was the second President (1924 to 1927) and the ninth Prime Minister (1932–1936) of Mongolia. Hi Bryan - would you still be able to have something Korean translated? I have an award document (as well as the actual award) for a Order of Flag first class awarded in 1951 (so during the Korean War!) and awarded to a Mongolian (!) and would be very interesting to see if the award document provides some clues as to why a Mongolian General was receiving the highest DPRK award during the Korean War Will post scans of the Mongolian-Soviet-DPRK group later today. In Ulaan Baatar right now, and i MAY have found out a little bit more on Sorkin in a local museum - the museum is the "Victims of Political Persecution Memorial Museum"... so that should give a hint (think Cambodian killing fields but on smaller scale)... pics to be posted when I'm back home.

I had the "Good Shooter" version of this badge in my hands earlier today (along with a type 1 Hero, and some assorted KGB, Sukb Baatar, early Red Banner,etc awards). Indeed, there appear to be two variations: - Good Shooter - Good Sword Hitter The Good Sword hitter badge (in reasonable condition considering the age, some enamle cracked/missing but generally OK) was said to have been bought by the dealer in the country side from a local for USD 16 not so long ago!! Will have some other nice pics to share when back, finally got close to a type 2 hero award (i.e. the "normal" gold hero star) for instance. Cold in UB, but glad I'm finally here!

Can highly recommend a visit to the Zeppeling museum in Friedrichshafen. Especially for the person holding on to this lovely group.

I'm a complete novice (or even less!) when it comes to Imperial Russian awards or Imperial German, really just got this because of the Tamara in it. Would be very interested to know more about the other awards so will be browsing GMIC over the weekend on that, and also would be interested to hear whether - due to the combination of awards - there's a chance to narrow down who may have been the recipient of this set (i realize that's wishing for something with a very slim chance!). Anybody with a view on this?
