Hi Trev, To my opinion, this is a square rig of a Commonwealth Navy lower rating. Interesting are the extremely long tapes hanging out of the jumper (non regulation) which were intended to keep the silk in place. Thus, all Commonwealth Navies basicly wore the same uniform, differences can be found in the prefix on the tally (HMS, HMCS, etc.), and the use of an embroidered title with the name of the colony or dominion (Australia, Nigeria, etc.).

This could indicate that the cap started life as a Merchant Navy cap and the woven band with cap badge was added later...

The cap badge dates post 1953 (Queen Elizabeth II), but the cap looks older to me. In or shorttly afte her coronation the cap badges with King's Crown were replaced. What type of crown is on the buttons?

I am trying to get my head around the use of RAD sleevebands. These were introduced per order of 4.1.39 and 5.3.39, and abolished per order from 29.4.41/7.5/41. Only the letters H, M, N, O, P, R, S, T W were used. Some letters were specified for the Westwall, others for the Eastwall. When I was in Prora (on the former DDR island of Rügen) I visited the museum of the building site, with a 2-dimensional display of the history of these buildings in particular and the uprising of the NSDAP in general. I was struck by a photo of Hierl visiting Eastern Prussia in company of other RAD dignitaries, all wearing a narrow (unreadable) sleeveband rond the right lower sleeve, according to the type specified to carry (Gothic) letters. In my photo collection I have an original photo of a RAD-man wearing a similiar sleeve band round his right sleeve. As uniforms were issued by the RAD Clothing Offices (Bekleidungsamt) I cannot imagine that these guys all had their wires crossed. So I asked a well respected author on German uniforms, an he told me that they were all mistaking, the sleevebands should be worn officially on the left cuff. What is your opinion/knowledge?

Is there never an ending to this? I have so many candle sticks and plates, and they just keep on coming. To my understanding there is no limit, these artifacts were produced by many (commercial) factories, who did not date or sign their product simply because they shifted other (commercial) gear also, and also it is hard to distinguish post war things from pre 45 as these items remaned the concept of interest all over the times. I am sure that half of my colledtion dates far pre or post the period, but I have no prove. And even applied runes are no prove for the period. Still, it remains an ever interesting field of interest. Let's keep posted.

Hi Westfale, The assumptions are correct (Verwaltungsbeamter der gehobene Dienst), but Justitzbeamter had a double upturned chevron, so that's no option. Can you be 100% sure the photo connects to the info?
