    1. Hallo Max Not meaning to downgrade the event, but can Mr. Walter Heiman really be called a WW1 Veteran? http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stor...64?OpenDocument "Walter Heiman, of University City, reads the newspaper headlines with a magnifying glass. Heiman ,105, fought in WWI as a member of the German Air Force. He recalls fleeing Nazi persecution of Jews like himself and pursuing life in the United States. (Noah Devereaux/P-D). According to the story he was "in training" and "He wanted to fly, as an observer in the back seat of a warplane. The army sent him off for training to an air base in Hanover. But Heiman?s flight career never got off the ground. He says, ?My training hadn?t finished when revolution broke out on Nov. 9. Then the Kaiser fled, and everybody was on his own, and I went home.? Strange, where he he himself states:But one memory he skirts is his service as a German soldier. ?Anything that had to do with the army, I want to forget,? he says. ?I have very bad memories.? Yeah war is hell when you are on a training course So at the most he could be described as a Non-Combatant or just a militray student on a course back in Germany, there is no evidence he fought anywhere, or that he set foot out of Germany during WW1. 2. Hallo Gentlemen with regards this thread, I have noticed several medal / insignia items with a pair of hands motif from various countries and I come to the conclusion that they are all linked to the FREEMASON / FREIMAURER Society is it not also possible that the item posted by "d.j" could be a similar item perhaps with a military connection, a Lodge say in a military establishment? 3. DOUBLE WOW with a GOLLY GOSH thrown in, that is what I call a model, maybe he should try a tank next Kevin in Deva
    4. Eduardo All I can say the guy looking in the picnic box is probably the driver Kevin
    5. Hallo Gents nice looking order, is the cross actually black or is it a dark ruby red colour, seeing as red has been seen in previous Polish awards, and part of the National colours. Kevin in Deva.
    6. Hallo Danny welcome to the club, whats your location in the Emerald Isle?, my family home is in Castlebar, Mayo, I am however, married & located out here in Transylvania, Romania. Kevin (Ryan) in Deva
    7. Hallo Gents, another idea would be to convert a steel gun safe for rifles, by putting in wooden frame with pull-out / sliding shelves to hold the medals and other items, the gun safe could be mounted in an out of the way place, like under the stairs, in a two story house, or an inconspicous corner in an appartment or single story dwelling and securely bolted to a wall to prevent removal. Depending on the quality of the safe the price will vary, the more affluant, could afford to have a carpenter clad the outside in wood, to blend in with the room. Then before heading away for a weekend, holiday etc, the most valuable pieces could be locked away, this way you have some piece of mind and the chance to handle the items. Kevin in Deva
    8. Hallo Gents Out of curisoty I sent the sellers a message via ebay and asked who there experts were, the following is there reply: "Hello KAR and thanks for your time and interest, This item comes from the personal collection of a man named John Korompilas out of Folsom, CA. He is a traveling memorabilia dealer who hits at least 30 shows across the United States a year and sells professionally at these shows. Other buyers of ours in the past recognize his name and have had nothing but positive things to say about him. We have done business with him for years ourselves and have never had any questions in regards to his integrity. Other badge dealers have come by the store to personally view other items of his (we have sold dozens of rare badges, patches and other memorabilia totaling nearly $20,000 in the past 12 months) and have never said anything other than that the badge is authentic - we've even had some independently verified as original by other professed 'experts'. Furthermore, due to the fickle and finicky nature of this badge business, we always offer a 100% money back guarantee with any items that we sell of his upon his insistence. So if you or anybody else were to purchase this badge or any other piece of war memorabilia and decide within 7 days that you did not want it, we'd be happy to refund the full purchase price upon return of the item. Anybody who would like to speak in person about this badge is welcome to call our toll-free phone number clearly stated in our listings for more information. Hopefully that answers your question - if you have any more, please feel free to ask. Best of luck and happy holidays! Regards - Paul. Any comments Gents, Kevin in Deva
    9. Hallo Dave, sorry for the mix up with regards Serbia-Montenegro but on the medal bar picture I posted the last award is it the same one as Danial Cole posted at the start of the thread?? Kevin in Deva
    10. Hallo Dan, I have seen the red, blue, white in broad stripes ribbon used on quite a few Serbian medals, and I begin to suspect this ribbon is readly available to be added to Serbian medals with no ribbons, the colours being the national ones of Serbia, there was a ribbon on Serbian medals which looked like the Italian one, but with thin stripes of red, white and blue. I have seen one before with the red and white ribbon similar to your picture and one on a bar with another type ribbon, which I believe to be the correct ribbon. I attach pictures from my photo reference file. As for the red and white ribbon maybe an award to a Non-Combatant? for bravery.

    13. Hallo Mustang, thanks for the reply, I checked the fastner and rivets but nothing at all I did give the webbing a light cleaning and it seems to have a "plastic / Nylon" construction so its must be much later than WW2, but the sheath is leather. Guess it will remain as unknown, must try to find a sheath knife with 5 inch blade next, always handy for sharpening the anti-vampire stakes Kevin in Deva. Transylvania
    14. Hallo Jacques can you post bigger pictures for comparison? its hard to see the difference between your set and the one posted by Naxos Kevin in Deva
    15. [attachmentid=63461] Hallo Eduardo, thanks for your comment about my picture with regards the other Postcard does it actually mention Kaiser Wilhelm II, by name to the rear of the card?? Tthe front loosely translates by online translator to: "In front of Arras. The last blow of the L'etrier (?) of Guillaume before making half turn." Hopefully one of our French or Belgian members can offer a better translation I attach your card after playing with the colours on the computer. Kevin in Deva
    16. Hallo Eduardo, you might be interested to see this picture, FORT VAUX in 1999 when I was on a visit. Kevin in Deva
    17. Hallo ksg with regards post Number 26, the badges on the board, specificaly, 4, 5, 7 top row, 3, & 4, second row, and number 1 on the fourth row, also 6 (Holland?) and 7 on the bottom row. And the first helmet on the left. All are possibly connected with the UNIFIL United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon. 1978 - 2000. Top row: 4. = Norway of course, NORMAINCOY, Norway Maintainance Company 5. = United Nations and would be worn on the opposite shoulder, to the wearers country of origin flash. As well as on the baseball style cap issued to UN troops. 7. = possibly SWEDMEDCOY, Sweden Medical Company of UNIFIL. Second Row: 3. = IRISHBATT. Irish Battalion. as worn by me in the 46th Irish Battalion. 4. = Another variant of 5 in top row. 5. = ITALY as worn by ITALIAIR in UNIFIL. Italiair flew UN choppers from UNIFIL HQ at Nacoura, on the Lebenese coast. Third Row: 1. = NIBATT. Nigerian Battalion of UNIFIL. Bottom Row: 6. = DUTCHBATT. Dutch Battalion of UNIFIL. 7. = GHANBATT. Ghanian Battalion of UNIFIL. The first helmet on the left would also be very familiar to members of UNIFIL, more often than not the plastic insert was painted blue and worn on checkpoints and sentry duty, of course the plastic shell offered no ballistic protection whatever Thanks for posting this picture it brings back some memories of a misspent youth Kevin in Deva, ex member of UNIFIL
    18. Hallo Paul, I can't see the photo being in post-war Romania as the Russians had control, and the wearing of German medals would have had dire effects, I believe Royal Romanian awards were quickly hidden as well. Again if P.O.W.'s the civilian men and women would have been seperated from the military group, it looks like they are hearing the latest (bad) news on the current military situation from the Romanian Officer. The whole group appear to be of Romanian soldiers and the guy in civil attire, with hat is obviously a veteran, who could have been discharged on medical grounds, hard to tell because of the position he is in, but the right sleeve of the jacket might be empty (or the other possibility a leg wound). He has the Romanian Cross for military merit hanging on the ribbon of military virtue. after the EK2, idicating a brave deed in combat. And his ribbon bar appears to have ben sewn directly to the jacket. I cant imagine any other reason for him to be dress so. Kevin in Deva.

I came across this interesting picture showing a Russian Orphan adopted as the unit mascot of an Estonian Police Unit. He seems well kitted out, even down to a smg!!
