    1. * Headstone to Aron Danci, born in 1921 died in 1942, the last name seems to be mis-spelt. And a more modern one to a soldier, Sergeant-Major CORNEA AUREL from the Communist era who died in 1992 Kevin in Deva
    2. Dear Gentlemen while having a look in the graveyard of the country church in the villageof Almasu Mic de Munte, where my holiday house is located, I discovered a beautiful handcarved trinity of crucifixes, upon closer inspection I noticed in the center a curtain was drawn over a wooden panel, upon being opened a very nice hand-painted panel bearing the names of the dead from WW1 and WW2 was reveled, I managed to get quite a decent picture of the plaque, but my shot of the entire monument was distorted by a glitch in the camera, however I post a winter photo of the crosses from a small website ran by a local guy, with permission. A TRANSLATION OF THE PLAQUE: "This saintly and monumental trinity of crosses was raised in the memory of, and the honouring of the heroes of this village - parish of Almasul Mic de Munte (Small Almasu of the Mountain,) who died on battle-fields, in the 2 World Wars, 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 And all the other Romanian heroes, who died before them, in all the wars, revolutions and uprisings (revolts or rebellion) carried out by the Romanian nation in the duration of its agitated history for the freedom, the sovereignty and the defence of our dear ancestors homeland. 3. Hallo Tom, this guy while not being a dyed in the wool fanatic, was sent for, took a train to the recruiting depot, ok maybe he didnt have a choice, what seems to have annoyed people was the way he lied about his service an left it so late to admit what he did. "Grass had for decades demanded that Germans come to terms with their Nazi past by coming clean on it. He won the Nobel prize for literature in 1999. ""After 60 years, this confession comes a bit too late," Joachim Fest, a leading historian, told Der Spiegel magazine. "I can't understand how someone who for decades set himself up as a moral authority, a rather smug one, could pull this off." Kevin in Deva
    4. Hallo Darrell Here is a picture of me getting the U N I F I L one from Commandant DaveTaylor I/C of "C"Company, 46th Bn U N I F I L 1979 - 1989, the Irish ones tended to have a longer ribbon and different relief, originaly with a broach suspension, (which was replaceded when re-ribboned) than the short stubby "US" stle you have posted, a picture of the medal can be seen at: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=7521 Post number 3. Kevin in Deva. PS maybe there will be a U N I F I L 2 medal created for the new UN force in South Lebanon.
    5. A Deep Sigh of envey, perminated with garlic schnapps wafts around the room forcing the vampires to pull stiftly back into the shadows of the great castle library. . . . Kevin in Deva
    6. Hallo Cam, my opinion and using prices I see on the net as a guide, the KVK II Class about 20 Euro, the Romanian Medal (which is very common, the rare ones are with battlebars on the ribbon) 13 - 15 Euro, and the bar 8 - 10 Euro, so in total I would think its worth 40 - 45 Euro, again it depends on the desireability and the availability of the item. As I said thats my personel opinion, other forum members may feel free to contradict me Please feel free to tell us what you paid Kevin in Deva.
    7. Hallo Theo Great Find, Congratulations makes a change from a helmet Kevin in Deva.
    8. Some great pictures Gentlemen thanks for sharing with us lesser mortals with an over abundance of "non frequent traveler miles" Kevin in Deva
    9. Hallo Cam, looks perfectly ok to me, typical of a Romanian issued medal to a German soldier, but I believe the Romanian ribbon on the bar is the German made one, which is thinner in width than the original Romanian Ribbon to be more in line with the size of German ribbons. Only way to be sure is to measure it. In all a nice set Kevin in Deva, Transylvania, Romania
    10. Hallo Gentlemen, any opinions on this one I just spotted on the net, seems to be full of goodies Nice price too http://cgi.ebay.at/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...DME:B:WNA:AT:12 Kevin in Deva
    11. Hallo Larry & Panzerman, thanks for the comments about my brothers style in model building and painting I will be sure to pass them along to him, may I obtain copies of the pictures you mentioned, for him to study?? I am sure I can pursuade him to send more pictures when he has a free moment or two, he is in his busy season now, he works as an absailing instructor and hill-walking - mountain guide at an adventure school in Ireland and deals mainly with under-privillaged kids, kids from problem homes, (Mother & Father have abused them or are drunks and drug users,) as well as Scout groups and School groups. He is with the help an Irish friend who lives in London, also busy working on a book with regards all known types of Armour used by the Irish Republic from 1922 to the present day, (with particular attention to the tanks received from Great Britain.) more details later on this project. Kevin in Deva,
    12. Hallo Cam , there are two known versions of this medal, the original Romanian made ones, with the designer name P. GRANT under the female head of Romania and a German or Austrian made version with no name under the female head of Romania. Which I imagine / presume had to pass some sort of quality control. I have encountered lots of them here in Romania seperated from the ribbon ring and I am not sure is it a sign of bad manufacture by various makers or just common mishandeling with time. Some German seem to have prefered wearing the medal with the sword (i.e. the back) facing forwards on their medal bars. See picture recently featured on Ebay. Kevin in Deva
    13. Spot on, Franz Josef of Austria Jubilee medal. came with a red and white ribbon as well. SEE: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=8470 Kevin in Deva

    21. MEMORIAL FOR FALLEN SOLDIERS OF WW1 & WW 2 FROM THE TOWN OF CUGIR, ALBA COUNTY, TRANSYLVANIA, ROMANIA. Cugir War Dead 1914 - 1918 Austro-Hungarian Army. The following list of names is to be found on the War Memorial located in the Transylvanian town of Cugir in the Alba County of Romania. The panel of names for WW1 are for men who served in the Austro-Hungarian Army as in WW1 Transylvania had been annexed by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This also explains why the war memorial is dated 1914-1918; Romania officially entered the war in 1916. Tablet 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 lists the names for WW1. Tablets 5 - 6 list the names from WW2 as no dates of death are included its hard to tell who died fighting against the Russians and later in the war who died fighting with the Russians. I think the reason for so many men listed as Sergeant in the WW2 section, may stem from the Romanian tradition of promoting a dead soldier one grade higher, hence a Private becomes a Corporal, a Corporal a Sergeant, how that effects a Sergeant rank I am not sure and must inquire, anyway it seems impossible for no Privates (Soldats) or Corporals (Caporal) to have been killed?? Its also uncanny how many men named Gheorghe - George were killed Kevin in Deva
    22. Hallo Bernie, Welcome to the forum, there is a section called "Guest Valuation and Identification" it takes a few hours for the items to appear once posted as they must be reviewed by one of the moderaters, perhaps they could move this thread there for you. The Gentlemen of the Club have been a big help in identifying some of my items, although it may take a little time as some are located in different time zones around the world. Also it will be a big help, if you can take some pictures (by digital camera) and attach them to the posts showing your items, remember to use the "add reply" after you post each picture and keep it all in the one thread which saves some space. Pictures taken out doors with natural light will be a great help as this can elimanate the nasty shine given off by the flash, also if the objects are small and flat they can be scanned, this is also good for any documentation. Pictures of the helmets, front, back, and sides and inner if possible, and jackets front and rear, and makers labels and collars, and sleeves for any badges or sewn insignia. With regards the musket pictures showing any makers marks or stampings will help as well as a full length shot of both sides of the weapon. I know its a little work to get all the pictures but the more taken the better for a positive id of your items. I hope this reply is some use to you, Kevin in Deva (Transylvania)
    23. Hallo Gordon in Canada and Sven in Bayern, many thanks for the information, Sven the jacket was bought in Bavaria (Sonthoffen) at a fleamarket. Kevin in Deva (Transylvania).
    24. Hallo Ceallach, welcome to the club, and many thanks for posting this rare medal, please feel free to post more Republic of Ireland Service medals. Kevin in Deva (Transylvania) formerly of Castlebar Co. Mayo.
