joe campbell Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 i am a computer chimp.i graduated from computer fetus to computer neonate, and am now a computer chimp.i can make small things big and medium size things fit,but FAIL at making big things small.so bear with me.... (the good twin certainly has!!!)Here is the obverse and reverse of a bari recently bartered/paid for at the MAX. (yes, there were some very nice pieces there, but not nearly enough...)the mounted group consists of:[attachmentid=13355]1) 1914 EK II2) 1915-18 Hamburg Hanseatenkreuz3) Rote Adler Orden ohne schwerter, fierte klasse4) Preussen 25 jahre DA5) Centenarmedaille6) Zahringen Lowe Ritterkreuz ohne schwertr, zwiete klasse, mit eichenlaub7) Baden KVK 1916-18 WHICH IS INCORRECTLY PLACED: this should have the 1902 Regierungsjubilaumsmedaille.[attachmentid=13356]it is in SUPERB condition, with red felt backing, and of excellent construction.it came in a period, unmarked, probably generic jewellers case, burgundy incolor with burgundy flocking on the base and burgundy silk on top.my deepest and most humble thanks to the rickmeister. while i have only knownhim a short while, i'd follow him anywhere. well, at least to any military show......besides, he made me promise to wash his car and rotate the tiresnext time i'm in the northeast.[attachmentid=13357]hope you all enjoy this one. joe
Guest Rick Research Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 The extra hook near the latch is an extra security feature we sometimes see to keep such a big rack from "sproinging" off. This is a Wunder Bar! Anybody got a Baden 1902 Jubilee medal so Joe can get this back to correct condition?
joe campbell Posted October 15, 2005 Author Posted October 15, 2005 one possibility i was pondering....COULD this gentleman have had the bar made up withthe 1902 jubilee, then received the baden KVK, and beinga thrifty german, decided to replace it himself?or am i thinking too much again????joe
Guest Rick Research Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 No one with such a bar would have been so....good taste challenged!
joe campbell Posted October 16, 2005 Author Posted October 16, 2005 okay...possibility #2....OEK #219 Goldene Regierungsjubilaumsmedaille G 1700 euroOEK #220 wie vor, bronzene Medaille Br 45 euromethinks someone somewhere down the line might have seenthe Goldene version on this strikingly nice bar and replaced the bad boy with something close.... your thoughts appreciated.joe
Guest Rick Research Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 No fears! THAT was for Exalted Beings, not Mere Mortals!Your requirement is indeed for the bronze version. Whew, huh!?
Bob Hunter Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 Joe, congratulations! No matter what goes in the tail gunner position it is lovely bar in crisp condition. As Herr Research has already noted, a "Wunder bar."
Stogieman Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Tough to find any BZL with Oakleaves mounted. Very nice bar!
Claudio Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 (edited) Hi Joe!Beautiful bar The ribbons surely look like brand new... and that even almost after 90 years!I don't want to be to picky or critical, but did you try to make a blacklight test the bright looking white parts ribbons? I have never seen such an immaculate white on ribbons of the Hanseatenkreuz Hamburg and the RAO 4th class. Nowadays you're never 100% sure... My congratulations again for your great mint looking bar! Ciao,Claudio Edited October 17, 2005 by Claudio
joe campbell Posted October 17, 2005 Author Posted October 17, 2005 it was the very first thing i did on getting this home, claudio!neither the ribbons or the "stuffing" in the bar lit up,the texture, the "feel' of the ribbons are consistent with new issue, high quality ribbon.this was a serendipitous find! your kind comments aregreatly appreciated.joe
Stogieman Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Looks exactly like a treasured 90+ year old set of awards should. This one was carefully cared for for years..........
Claudio Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Joe,I am happy for you! Sometimes you come across such immaculate pieces.... I have also one medal bar with very brand new looking ribbons: a Bavarian bar ... even tougher, because it seems that Bavarian were quite proud to wear more often bars at every occasion - more traditional part of Germany - and also the Bavarian light blue looses so easily its original colour...Nice found! What you want more ... Ciao,Claudio
saschaw Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 okay...possibility #2....OEK #219 Goldene Regierungsjubilaumsmedaille G 1700 euroOEK #220 wie vor, bronzene Medaille Br 45 euromethinks someone somewhere down the line might have seenthe Goldene version on this strikingly nice bar and replaced the bad boy with something close.... your thoughts appreciated.joeI'm late, but I am It's been probably the Bronze one, as the Golden one has only been awarded to about 44 princes, kings, dukes and so one, who have been at the Granddukes Jubilee Party I've only seen one real golden medal by now, some weeks ago on a bar at Thies' auction. But many officers let their Bronze medal gilt, as it looks much beter, as we can imagine
joe campbell Posted August 17, 2006 Author Posted August 17, 2006 saschaw-thank you.the 1902 medal has been placed into itsproper place now, and all is well!joe
Deruelle Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Hi Joe, Can you show us the bar now, please ?Christophe
Gerd Becker Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Wow, i totally missed this one. What a beautiful bar!!! Lets see a picture of the restored condition, Joe.
joe campbell Posted August 17, 2006 Author Posted August 17, 2006 thank you kindly for your sentiments!my scanner is currently under the weather, but as soon as it's fixed, i'll get them up.joe
joe campbell Posted August 17, 2006 Author Posted August 17, 2006 BTW,consideration of the recipient's career/military function would be appreciated.physician? administrative?thanks!joe
KeithB Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 (edited) First this is a beautiful bar.But the location of the Hanseatic Cross and the Zahringer Lion it bothering me to no end. It would seem that the natural place to put it would be either after the Red Eagle while at the same time moving the Zahringer Lion up, or behind the Lion.In other words I would think it would either be all Prussian awards followed by the others, or Iron Cross followed by actual orders followed by bravery/merit with the long service and commemoratives at the end.Can anybody explain for my simple mind why it was done this way?administrative? It goes without saying that there are better people to answer this, but the Iron Cross is on a combatant?s ribbon. I wouldn't think that an administrator or many of the other unexciting possibilities would qualify for that. Edited August 18, 2006 by KeithB
saschaw Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 But the location of the Hanseatic Cross and the Zahringer Lion it bothering me to no end. It would seem that the natural place to put it would be either after the Red Eagle while at the same time moving the Zahringer Lion up, or behind the Lion. The Hanseatencross has to be much in front of the REO and the BZL, as these two are peacetime, and the Hanseatencross is a wartime award - even if the wearer of the bar was a Prussian or Badener (and I think he was, with this two Baden awards).
