    Soviet & Eastern Block Quiz

    Recommended Posts

    Very good Christian, you found the Industria Aeronautică Rom?nă as well as the IAR-93 which was the ground attack plane I mentioned above. You are now really close. Believe me that the information on the Romanian fighter project is there on the www, you just have to look for it. ;) I do not want to keep the game still, so if there will be no more answers until tomorrow evening I will give the full path to find it.

    IAR-95 "Spey"

    Dear Carol,

    found it - it's the Spey: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IAR_95 :D .

    It was really a pity, that the joint venture between Romania & Yugoslavia broke :( . So neither the Romanians, nor we could build a supersonic fighter.

    But the Spey lives on as the Chinese FC-1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC-1 :jumping: .

    Our Novi Avion or "Yugo-Rafaele" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novi_Avion was never born :( .

    Hope my answer is right ;) .

    Best regards :beer:

    NEW QUESTION :unsure:?

    Gentlemen,

    now a really easy question about a well known guy, who earned a large collection of Soviet medals ;) .

    Who am I?

    What did I do?

    What is so special about my medals?

    Try to guess - you will know that comrade, even without his medals at his chest ;) .

    10.000 Views Benchmark :jumping::jumping:

    Gentlemen,

    we just hit the benchmark of 10.000 views for one single thread. That seems to be unrivalled at GMIC :D .

    Soon we will hit the benchmark of 1.000 replies.

    Congratulation to Christophe for his brilliant idea :cheers:

    That's Igor Kurchatov.

    He's famous for having the most impressive beard in the world at the time. Oh, he also was the head of the Soviet atomic bomb project.

    I'm not sure what was special about his medals, but he won 3 heroes of Soviet labour titles as well as 5 Lenin's, plus 2 red banners of labour. Also won a silver Jolio Curie medal for peace despite making weapons..

    Belaruski is the winner :jumping:

    Dear Belaruski,

    congratulations - all questions answered - you are the winner :beer: .

    Yes, it was the famous Igor Kurchatov: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igor_Kurchatov .

    He had been one of the (very) rare receipients of 3 HSLs.

    Now it is your turn :D .

    Hope my answer is right ;) .

    Yes Christian, your have indeed given all the right answers.

    The project was the IAR-95. It was initiated in the late 1970s aiming to build a Romanian supersonic fighter, but although the structural design was rather advanced, the project was suspended in 1981 due to the lack of a suitable powerplant. Work was resumed in the mid 1980s as the IAR-101 or IAR-S when Romania sought to initiate a collaboration with Yugoslavia. But after Yugoslavia declined the offer, the project was unfortunately cancelled towards the end of the 1980s due to lack of funds. There is indeed some speculation that the project had resurfaced on the other side of the globe as the Chinese-Pakistani FC-1/JF-17 as there are many similarities between the two projects, but there is no confirmation of the Chinese buying the IAR-95/101/S plans.

    I have started with the image of the double fin model because it sported the Romanian national colours. A Google search after "Romanian fighter project" turned the Wikipedia entry on the project that contained a further link to the page on the Romanian Supersonic Projects from the National Institute for Aerospace Research where one can find some further images of the project.

    Congratulations again. :beer:

    many thanks for your congratulations :cheers: .

    It had been a difficult job, to find the right answer ...

    Major-General Nikolai Pavlovich Stakhanov?

    Dear Auke,

    that seems to be the right answer: http://www.generals.dk/general/Stakhanov/N...viet_Union.html ;) .

    But we have to wait for Belaruski's confirmation ...

    Question: What had been the function of these guys with the green caps during the GPW :unsure: ? Except in the far & middle east there had not been a border in the classical sense - the front had been most of the time on the move.

    It is also interesting, that the CO of the border troops had only the rank of a Major-General :unsure: .

    Correct answer!

    The border troops moved forward as the Red Army did. See the Wikipedia entry for Soviet border troops and you'll see some of my contributions as to who served where!

    The Border troops were very loyal handpicked soldiers, and as such were attached to all Soviet fronts. As the war moved West so did the NKVD border troops.

    many thanks for the Wiki-hint - that's the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USSR_Border_Troops .

    10.000 Views Benchmark :jumping:

    Hi Christian and All!!!!

    Just coming back from a week long trip abroad, and I can see that, again, our little quiz has been extremely dynamic thanks to all of you!!! :jumping: We have even broken out the barrier of the 10,000 views, and are close to the 1,000 answers!!!! Congratulations!!!! :beer:

    The idea here, was not initially to be one of the most "active" thread, but more to relax in learning, discovering some new historical aspects of our common passions. I think we have more than fulfilled these two objectives!!!! :jumping: And, I have to say that all the posts in this quiz are of outstanding value and quality!!! Just read again the quiz since its beginning and you will see!!!!! :love:

    Christian, other threads are also very "performing" in the Forum :

    * The "Tinnie Database", launched on 21 Jan. 2006 by Nick, our Chairman : 1,170 answers and 8,500 views !!!!

    http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=5051

    * "A Collection of Awards" , launched on 4 Feb. 2006 by WAR LORD, where Christopher displays his extraordinary collection : 479 answers and 13,840 views !!!!

    http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=5516

    I think these two are the most "popular" ones...

    Here are now, on this "historical" moment, some new stats :

    This small game has now been launched 16 months ago now (on 1 Nov. 2005), and since :

    * 84 questions asked,

    * with 990 answers,

    * and 50 pages of Q&As.

    * This quiz has been viewed more than 10,120 times.

    * 31 Members of the Forum played, and 23 correctly answered at least 1 question :

    Nb of good answers :

    * 14 : Christian (Zulus)

    * 10 : Christophe

    * 9 : Bryan (Soviet)

    * 8 : Simon (Red Threat)

    * 4 : Ed (Haynes) and Wild Card.

    * 3 : Andreas (Alfred), Auke (Ferdinand), Belaruski, and Kim (Kimj).

    * 2 : Carol I, Chuck (in Oregon), Franck (Knarf), Gerd (Becker), Ivan (Piramida), Jan (vatjan), and Order of Victory.

    * 1 : Darrell, Daredevil, Dave (Navy FCO), Dudeman, Rick (Stogieman) and Steen (Ammentorp).

    This is a great achievement. Thanks to all for your participation. :jumping:

    Now, let's continue to have fun with the 85th question... Auke's one!!!

    Cheers.

    QUIZ IS NO. 1

    Dear Christophe,

    no, I think, that our quiz is No. 1 at GMIC :D !

    Why ?

    We are the best in dealing with both aspects: Replies AND views.

    The Nazi-Tinnies have a lot of replies, but lesser views - o.k., that's normal, because it is a very special field of collecting ;) .

    Christopher's presentation of his more than hughe collection has a relativly small number of replies, but a hughe number of views - o.k., that's also normal, because everone wants to see, what is Christopher presenting next ;) .

    I think, that replies and views should be equally important.

    So, there remains only one thread at GMIC with a high number of replies AND a high number of views: Christophe's Quiz :jumping: .

    The quiz ist the only thread at GMIC with a 4-digit-number of replies AND a 5-digit-number of views.

    So you started the No. 1 thread at GMIC :cheers: .

    Best regards :beer:

    Christian

    BTW: At my screen - eight year old IBM-tube-screen (I like the brilliance of tubes - in viewing & recording my CDs) - I have only 25 pages. But it needs a long time to scroll one page down :( . Maybe I have to adjust something :unsure: ?

    Dear Auke,

    congratulations to your 3rd win and your promotion to rank #6 of "good answerers" :cheers: .

    Your new question to us - the big No. 85 - might hit the 1.000-replies-benchmark and transform the quiz-thread into an unique (at GMIC) 4-digit/5-digit-thread.

    Whose answer to your coming question will hit the number 1.000 :unsure: ?

    Best regards :beer:

    Hi Christian,

    Thanks for your kind words about the Quiz. :beer:

    You are probably right to correct my modesty. This Quiz is potentially the No. 1 thread of this Forum, and, even if it not a target in itself, we'll probably reach the first position (thanks to all of you) in both views and posts!!! So, at that time, there will be no discussion :rolleyes: ...

    About the 25/50 pages, for display, I use the Forum Default settings. If you want to change yours, please, go there : My Controls / Board Settings.

    Hope this helps.

    This shouldn't be such a difficult question, so we will probably stay below 1000 replies in this thread.

    We probably all recognise this medal. But which statue is depicted on it?

    medtm6.jpg

    I want to know:

    1. The name of the statue (Russian and English)

    2. Where it is

    3. A famous person who was involved in designing it

    Good luck!

    1. Name of the statue : Mother Motherland (Родина-мать)

    2. Located at Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd (Stalingrad), Russia.

    3. Done by Yevgeny Viktorovich Vuchetich (1908? 1974). Hero of Socialist Labor (1967), People's Artist of the USSR (1959). Lenin Prize (1970) and Stalin Prize (1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950), Order of Lenin (twice), Order of the Patriotic War of 2nd degree.

    Author of the sculpture of Felix Dzerzhinsky (1958), used to be in Moscow at the Lubyanka Square. and of the Soviet War Memorial (Sowjetische Ehrenmal) in Treptower Park, Berlin.

    Auke

    Dear Auke,

    1.: "Rodina Mat' Zovyot!" or "The Motherland Calls!", which is not a sooooo correct translation ;) . It should be somehow like: "The Mother of your Motherland Calls You!", but this sounds queer ...

    2. Stalingrad (I never accepted that "Volgograd" :angry: ), Mamayev Kurgan. It is with 85m height the tallest statue in the world :D . Offical website: http://mamayevhill.volgadmin.ru/ (Russ., Engl. & Germ.)

    3. Well, the designer had been the Yugoslavian (from familiary origin) :jumping::Dsculptor HSL Vuchetich http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yevgeny_Vuchetich , who actually made most of the other famous monuments: Berlin, UNO, etc. But the major consultant had been Marshal of the Soviet Union Vasily Chuikov http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasily_Chuikov , who is buried directly under the statue - as many other defenders of Stalingrad.

    Hope my answers were sufficient ;)

    Christian,

    I think you got it!!!! As your answer to questions #3 is far more precise than mine. I did not mention Chuikov, even if I knew that Chuikow was buried there, being (I think) the only Soviet Union Marshal not buried in Moscow... But, I did not realized Chuikov helped in the design... :blush:

    Congrats!!!
