Motorhead Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 This one is strange-one piece, but complete in brass! The eye ring is just a piece of wire in a hole, the cross itself looks like one of the poor manufactured ones you can always find....just in brass.I'm sure the "core" is pebbled......Micha
Motorhead Posted May 21, 2009 Author Posted May 21, 2009 "Ugly and not believable" I agree with the ugly.....and I'm not sure what I've got here. No official piece at all! Either a try to jump on the train and make some money with the private manufacturing of iron crosses in the 20/30ies or just someone made a copy in brass. No idea...but anyway,it has it's place in the cabinet of the "strange" ones.Micha
gregM Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Check these out-----http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/sho...hlight=brass+ek
Motorhead Posted May 21, 2009 Author Posted May 21, 2009 Very interesting! So it looks like we have two different brass variations..........one more to go! Micha
gregM Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 (edited) another UGLY (brass?) variation. Edited May 21, 2009 by gregM
hunyadi Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 another UGLY (brass?) variation. This is a French propoganda cross as per the Iron Times
gregM Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 I've seen the book and read old threads about these crosses but there still seems to bea little bit of doubt.http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/sho...ad.php?t=349912Moderators--If I am out of line posting this link, please remove it.Greg
Motorhead Posted May 23, 2009 Author Posted May 23, 2009 Nothing wrong-I didn't know there was a discussion about it until you showed me the link! I still have my doubts about any!! 1914 austrian manufactured iron crosses! But anyway-that variation is a keeper and the only wrong thing I can see is-it's not in my collection!Micha
gregM Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 (edited) But anyway-that variation is a keeper !Michathanks Micha,That was my view as well. Odd enough or should I say interesting enough to keep. Real Ek or not. Edited June 4, 2009 by gregM
Beau Newman Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 I've had this for many years. One piece brass with very good details. Full size.http://gmic.co.uk/uploads/monthly_05_2009/post-6181-1243113179.jpghttp://gmic.co.uk/uploads/monthly_05_2009/post-6181-1243113206.jpg
Kriztofer Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 Could these be field made? Ugly or not I like these examples.
PKeating Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Here are a couple of one-piece or ersatz EK2 1914 I have had for a long time. They're struck on the same set of dies but one is unfinished. The finished example seems to be stove-enamelled. The strike is, as you can see, of very quality. They look a bit like nickel but that would have been a restricted resource so I'd hazard a guess that they are of good quality plated brass, judging by the ringing sound when tapped gently against a wooden surface.PK
gregM Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 There are examples of one piece crosses being die struck from "Nue-silber". A nickel alloy.
PKeating Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 I hadn't thought of neu-silber. Thanks, Greg. I would say that these two crosses are struck in neu-silber. PK
George Hammerton Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 (edited) Very interesting find...I think it could in fact be genuine........in fact, similiar to what gregM said, there are numerous accounts of iron crosses being cast out of virtually anything near the end of world war I......it was cheaper than solid silver. So in fact....I think it is genuine, yet just a later version Edited June 3, 2009 by George Hammerton
ksg Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 I don?t have any 2. class in brass, but here is a 1. class, tree pice construction. Kjell
ksg Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 I had a 2. class in brass after all. Brass frame, loop and suspension ring, but a two pice iron sheet core.Kjell
