heusy68
Hello Gentlemen, here I will try to list the Medals,Decoration & Specific Merit Orders of the Republic of Niger. Of course this list is incomplete, and if someone can help to fill the gap,I will pay tribute to him. In my recent post there has been friendly & enthusiast member that follows and post the pictures of items they own,or from items hosted in their computer.I pay tribute to them. Here in this topic it's about Republic of Niger (not Nigeria),so please do not post a medal of Nigeria here,it won't help.Maybe later there will be a post on Nigeria. The 2 Higher Orders of the Republic of Niger : National Order of Niger & Order of Merit of Niger will be on a separate topic. Here I present the Military Medal. This medal was instituted by Law 63.153/PRN of 9 August 1963. This medal maight be attributed for those Officers & NCO who have at least completed 8 years of service and have got a citation by the Minister of National Defense or if they got wounded in face of the enemy or in service. The reverse is blank. Emmanuel
heusy68
Here is the Order of the Agricultural Merit of the Niger. The 2 palm of corn as a suspension would indicate it's a commander insignia, but I bought it like that. (ribbon is correct). So a conform to decreee insignia of a Knight of Agricultural Merit would be the same, but without the 2 palms suspension. Reverse is blank. This Order is a 3 classes Order and has been created by Law 63.135/PRN of 25 July 1963. Emmanuel Edited February 14, 2011 by heusy68
heusy68
Here it is the Order of the Academic Palm of the Niger. As to follow the french tradition, the specific merit Orders have 3 classes : Commander - Officer - Knight. The Order of the Academic Palm was instituted by Law 69.68/PRN/CHAN/MEN of 15 March 1969. Here is presented the insignia of a Knight of the Academic Palm. As there is the name of the decoration on reverse,I present the reverse. It's not silver for those who wants to know more,it's silvered metal. And size is 40 x 32 millimeters. It's hard to see,but the space between the bottom part of the Agadez Cross and the palm leaf on border is filled by dark purple enamel. heusy68
Here it is the Medal of Labor. It's a 4 Classes Medal instituted by Law 67.126/MFP/T of 7 September 1967. To enter in the criteria for the Labor Medal you can change only ounce of job on your career !!! The Bronze Medal is suspended to a ribbon without rosette and is for 15 years of service. The Silver Medal is suspended from a ribbon with rosette and is for 20 years of service. The Gold Medal is suspended to the ribbon by a double palm of corn and as a ribbon with rosette and a strap from each side of the rosette. This medal is for 30 years of service. The Great Gold Medal is similar to the Gold Medal but the border is larger so its diameter is 29 millimeters instead of 27 millimeters for the 3 lwer classes. The Great Gold Medal is for 35 years of service. heusy68
In Niger we miss a lot of picture. Niger Medal of Honour of Public Health instituted by Law 64.132/PRN of 3 July 1964 in 4 classes Niger Medal of Honour of the Custom Service instituted by Law 66.050 of 18 March 1966.It's a single class medal. You need a minimum of 12 years of service to enter in the criteria to be awarded this medal, and only 5 can be awarded yearly. Niger Croix de la Vaillance ( Cross of valour ) .instituted by Law 65.064/PRN of 30 April 1964. Niger who sent 500 troops to Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War of 1990-91 also instituted a specific medal for this campaign. There was a ceremony on 3 August 1992 when these medals were awarded. If someone has a picture of this ceremony,it would be interesting. Emmanuel
heusy68
On 18 February 2010 there was a Military Coup d'etat in Niger and Salou Djibo took control and emprisoned former President Tandja. So on summer 2010,on 3 August,it was Salou Djibo who was on the parade for the 50th Indepedence of Niger. Click on the lonk below, you will see a larger picture, then click on the picture itself and download it on your own computer to increase its size. At left on first row he's wearing Order of Merit of Niger, but the 2 Next Medal ??? They are not UN Medal. If anyone has a better picture or a constructive thought .....he's always welcome to post it here. http://www.ladepeche...-a-l-armee.html Emmanuel Edited February 14, 2011 by heusy68
heusy68
At last I was recently able to get a Niger : Medal of Honour of Public Health 2n Class (silver-gilt). This medal was instituted by Law 64.132/PRN of 3 July 1964. It is said that is is a 4 classes medal : gold,silver-gilt,silver & bronze. To get the bronze medal, you need 5 years of service in the following proffession : doctor in medecine, pharmacist, technical health agent, nurse, social service staff, midwife. To get the silver medalyou need 10 years of service in total, and 15 years of service for the vermeil (silver-gilt). The gold medal wear a rosette on ribbon and is only awarded on exceptionnal case. Actually the medal I own is gilded bronze. I guess the medals that were awarded in the 60ies & 70ies were in silver & silver gilt. The medal is 32 millimeters in diameter and the orange center that matches the ribbon is in real enamel (not synthetic epoxy). Herman
Emmanuel, in post # 8 you mention "At left on first row he's wearing Order of Merit of Niger, but the 2 Next Medal ??? They are not UN Medal." You are talking about Salou Djibo. His second and third medals are indeed no UN medals. I am not known with the orders, decorations and medals of Niger but the person at the right side of the picture, Captain Seydou, his second medal surely looks a lot like the UN medal awarded for UNMIL (UN Mission in Liberia). This mission started in 2003 and Niger supplied forces till 2009. See the enclosed picture. His first medal is the same as Djibo and must surely be a Niger award. I always like ODM's from African states as sometimes they are very well made and detailed. Herman Edited January 21, 2012 by Herman
Herman
Salou Djibo's fifth medal surely looks a lot like a UN medal aswell. See for yourself. The first pictured medal comes the closest. Both medals are for an UN mission in Ivory Coast. UNOCI, started in 2004, and MINUCI. Niger supplied forces to UNOCI. Dave Danner
The two medals on Gen. Djibo and the Captain's first one appear to be commemorative or service medals, the Niger equivalent of a General Service Medal. Here is a close-up of Djibo's ribbon bar. As you can see, the 2nd and 3rd ribbons have devices: RCI and ROC. Those would appear to be for the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire and the (Democratic) Republic of the Congo. They match the UN medals - for UNOCI and MONUC - immediately below each.

Dave Danner
Here is the ribbon bar of Ali Saibou, President of Niger from 1987-1993. His first ribbon is the National Order of Niger (Ordre national du Niger), and the second ribbon is the same as Salou Djibo's 4th one. It looks like the device may be a palm. The rest, starting with the West German Bundesverdienstkreuz in third place (grade: Großes Verdienstkreuz mit Stern), are foreign awards. The first two on the second row may be the French Legion of Honor and National Order of Merit. Not sure about the third. The first one on the third row is the National Order of Mali. Next might be the National Order of Benin, but I'm not sure. The third one looks like the National Order of Vietnam, but that would make no sense, so it is probably another African order. The single yellow ribbon on the third row appears to be the Order of Cameroonian Merit (Ordre du Mérite Camerounais).

Prince Rwagasore [burundi]. The first one on the third row is the National Order of Mali. Next might be the National Order of Benin, but I'm not sure----Benin N.O. ribbon claret with central stripe red bordered green bordered yellow. As this appears solid green, perhaps, Lion [senegal]. heusy68
Hello Gentlemen, here is the Niger : Croix de la Vaillance or Cross of Valour. This seldom seen decoration was created by Decree N° 65.064/PRN of 30 April 1964. The ribbon may wear a palm (citation to army order), or a star (citation to army corps). Thanks to Ilja to have rectify the ribbon on the above post concerning Knight of Agricultural Merit. Now the picture is correct. Emmanuel
heusy68
Here is Niger Medal of Honour of Custom Service. You must have been a custom agent for at least 12 years, to have the right to be awarded this medal (read the post below by Megan, it seems now 15 years as custom agent is a minimum). The diameter of this medal is 32 millimeters. Emmanuel Edited April 21, 2012 by heusy68

heusy68
Hello Gentlemen, 7 years Nothing new on Niger !!! Ok, time to add some new information. There is now at least a Type 2 of the Military Medal ( Medaille Militaire ), see first post of this topic. There is now a variation of manufacturer. As you can see, the more recent one is "open work" and flat reverse. Never get bored with medals. Emmanuel
heusy68
And now, another class of the Public Health Medal, the 1st Class (with rosette on ribbon and "laurel like" suspender). In french, the 1st Class, is called : Médaille d'Or de la Santé Publique (despite not being made of gold). The 2nd Class is called : Médaille de Vermeil (Silver Gilt Medal of the Public Health). I've seen, ounce a 4th Class Medal, a bronze one, but without ribbon. The 3rd Class should then be silvered, but I have never seen one. But anyways, these are rarely seen medals, even in Medal Show in France. Best regards. Emmanuel Edited March 5, 2019 by heusy68
