Chip Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 The history of the Sturmbataillon I has a version a Weber's "Gut Sturm" sketch at the start of it's Ehrentafel.Chip
IrishGunner Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 (edited) Im april the bataillon Rohr consisted of (I use the german terms)4 Sturm-Kompanien1 MG-Kompanie1 Minenwerfer-Kompanie1 Flammenwerfer-Abteilung1 Batterie 10,5cm Haubitzen1 Pionier-Kompanie Sturm Bataillon had an artillery battery?! Is this true for all Sturm Bataillon? If so, I may just have developed an new interest in the units... Edited August 11, 2015 by IrishGunner
The Prussian Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Hello IG!No, as far as I know, only the SB 5 had an artillery-unit
IrishGunner Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Hello IG!No, as far as I know, only the SB 5 had an artillery-unitThanks, that will make my life easier!
Chip Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 I thought most Sturm Bataillone had an Infanterie Geschütz Batterie that it worked in tandem with.
The Prussian Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 No, only the 5th btl.Here are the compositions:SB1: Staff, 3 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp and 1 MW-comp.SB2: Staff, 4 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp.SB3: Staff, 4 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp, 1 flame-thrower det., Inf.Gesch.Bttr.3SB4: Staff, 2 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp.SB5: Staff, 4 storm-comp (+ 1 park-comp.), 2 MG-.comp., 1 MW-comp., 1 flame-thrower det., 1 Gesch-Bttr.SB6: Staff, 2 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp.SB7: Staff, 2 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp.SB8: Staff, 2 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp.SB9: Staff, 2 storm-comp., 1 light MG-Det., 1 MW-comp.SB10: Staff, 2 storm-comp., 1 MG-.comp., 1 MW-comp.SB11: Staff, 2 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp.SB12: Staff, 3 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp.SK13: Staff, 1 storm-comp., 1 MG-Det., 1 MW-Det.SB14: Staff, 2 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp.SB15: Staff, 2 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp.SB16: Staff, 4 storm-comp., 1 MG-comp., 1 MW-comp Note: The Inf-Gesch.Bttr.3 was an independent unit, detached to the storm-bataillon, while the Gesch-Bttr. of the 5th belonged to them
Chip Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Hi Andy,Yes, worked in tandem with, not part of. My history of the Sturm=Batl.Nr.1 also includes Infanterie Geschütze Batterie Nr.2's history, since they worked together most of the time.
The Prussian Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Working in tandem a nd part of it are differences.Sturm-Btl.1 and Gesch.Bttr.2. Does that fit? Gesch.Bttr.2 was bavarianThose Inf.Gesch-Bttr. normally stood under command of an army-commando.The were other Inf.Gesch.Bttr., attached to the "Sturm-Bataillon of the 5th army":Inf.Gesch.Bttr.3 (27.7.16-10.8.16)Inf.Gesch.Bttr.6 (25.8.16-11.9.16)Inf.Gesch.Bttr.9 (10.9.16-24.9.16) and attached to Sturm-Btl.14 (11.1.17-23.1.17)Inf.Gesch.Btl.10 (23.12.16-11.1.17)The Inf.Gesch.Bttr.8 was attached to Sturm-Btl.6 (9.3.16)So, of course a lot of the Sturm-Bataillone attacked with guns, but mostly they belonged to the AOK, not to the bataillon
IrishGunner Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Not to crack nuts, but Andy's organization of SB 5 stated that the Geschütz Batterie was armed with 10,5cm Haubitze - an artillery piece - vice the 7,5cm Infanterie Geschütz - an infantry weapon - normally of the Infanterie Geschütz Batterie. That to me was the significant data point and the genesis of my question. An organic artillery unit to a SB is quite interesting...vice an attached or a "habitual relationship" Infanterie Geschütz Batterie. Cracking nuts to be sure...but a significant splinter in my opinion. Especially when trying to paint a complete picture of German artillery in WWI.
Chris Boonzaier Posted August 11, 2015 Author Posted August 11, 2015 This implies a rather fixed relationship.... I also have a Sturmbataillon Nr 14 document to their attached Inf Geschutz Batterie 9. which seems to have spent a long time with them.
The Prussian Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Note, that the IGB 2-9 were equipped with russian 7,62cm!
Chip Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Andy,According to the unit history, the Russian guns were replaced in the summer of 1917 by the new Infanterie Geschütz L20/17.Chip
The Prussian Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Yes, Chip. You´re right. I forgot to mention. Thanks for the addition!

Info is hard to find.Jef
The Prussian Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Hello Jef!I´ve got this composition from the book:Deutsche Sturmtruppen (Troupes d´assault allemandes 1914-1918), written by Jean-Louis Lacarde. But the language is french!
Chris Boonzaier Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 I think it impotant to remember that it was possible /Probable that some Inf Geschütz Batteries were probably on permanent detachment to a SB, although not an intergral part of that battalion. i.e. the only thing seperating them was being on the payroll of that battalion. The Werner Lacoste book shows how SB Unit commanders were very carful not to get "extra weight" sapping their finances, so a batterie on permanent detachment, but not part of the unit, saved costs for the SB commander.Anyway, as can be seen the 7th and 14th had batteries detached to them for onger periods of time.

AOK4 Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Infanterie-Geschütz-Batterie 6 worked together with Sturm-Bataillon 4.Sturm-Bataillon 4 had a MW Kompanie with 8 leichte Minenwerfer, a MG Kompanie with 9 MG 08 (later 10 and increased to 12 by 1918) and 2 Sturm-Kompanien (at least early 1917) with 2 MG 08/15 each (by 1918 24 MG 08/15 belonged to Sturm-Bataillon 4).Sturm-Bataillon 4 also had a MG Kompanie of a Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon at its disposal for MG training.Jan
IR 134 Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 One more card. On 25.6.2015 at 08:04, Chris Boonzaier said: Hi, the Heil Stosstrupp seems to be part of a series.... The whole series consists of 6 cards. Extract from Schumacher/Dorsch: A. Paul Weber: Leben und Werk "...Weitere Kontakte folgten, so zum Verlag Fritz Würtz in Berlin-Steglitz, der ein Aquarell Webers (Blick auf Wilna) als Postkarte herausbrachte, und zum Verlag der Wanderschriften-Zentrale, Hellerau bei Dresden, der dem Gedankengut der Jugendbewegung nahe stand. Hier erschienen 1917 die drei sechsteiligen Postkartenserien (Anm. 056) „Deutsches Kriegsziel“, „Heil Stosstrupp“ und „Die deutsche Frau in der Heimarmee“ see http://www.weber-museum.de/bio_dor_schu/bio_dorsch_schu_01.html Gruß Stefan
Chris Boonzaier Posted December 25, 2016 Author Posted December 25, 2016 The front has no connection to the unit... but this is pretty cool....
The Prussian Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 Phantastic! Where did you get them? I' ve never seen an offer like that
bolewts58 Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 This just sold for 207 EUR on eBay. Although the crown seems slightly smaller and the cross on top of the orb is a bit shorter, it appears to be an original Rohr sleeve badge. Any other opinions?
Chip Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 I'm skeptical. The backing material is poorly cut and was never sewn to anything. If it was not sewn to a uniform, why would you need to reinforce the attachment of the devices with thread? If I'm not mistaken, this "W" cypher exists on a regimental shoulder board as well. Chip

Chip so someone got badly burned, then.
