SWE Erik Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Nice badge Kevin. Do You know what it is? I have seen it described both as a "Red flag company badge" and "For Communism badge". Here is a Cholima badge that i got today. It is quite worn but I think 39$ was ok for it./Erik

Because the Korean characters on the obverse can be translated to this meaning. And the former one is the name that the collectors called it.Tang Si

I think it is awarded to the personnel who archieved a distinguished manner in Socialist construction? Tang Si
Bob Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 And the good thing about the last one posted, it came with a document.Still have to find someone, who can read it...I had to light the picture of the cover up a bit, because the writing wasn?t readable. Its dark brown in reality.I just dived in and bought my first NK award as well. Did this (of all places) in minsk. National Order of Flag 2nd class, soviet screwback, number in 5K range... WITH a booklet... including a photograph... awarded to a (Bela)russian (he certainly doesn't look North Korean) in 1957.Will post pics when I am back home.
Bob Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 How is Minsk Bob!Minsk is great! Certainly very different (i.e. more "life") than last time I was here about 7 years ago though. Also, striking is that the entire country is now virtually paved... the road network (I am here by car... Brussels-Vilnius-Polatsk-Vitsebsk-Minsk-Brest (tomorrow)-Hrodna and than back home again).I liked Minsk a lot last time as well... there are people that can't stand it because it's so modern (due to WW2) but I rather like the fact that it's so spaciously set up with parks, wide roads, river and of course that beautiful Stalinist architecture on the main artery through the city:)I'm afraid - for nostalgic people like me - it's going to be harder and harder to travel to countries and have a bit of an old fashioned Soviet experience.Interestingly enough, I have yet to see 1 single Soviet award for sale... saw some (extremely overpriced) Mongolian awards for sale and also some pre-socialist russian awards but nothing soviet at all (besides some pins and stuff).

Belaruski Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Bob, original Soviet awards are prohibited to be sold, as in Russia. However in Belarus the law is much more strictly applied!

Bob Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Bob, original Soviet awards are prohibited to be sold, as in Russia. However in Belarus the law is much more strictly applied!Must be - didn't see an award for sale at all. Just back. Will scan/post korean award tomorrow... and also pics of some great museums (with lots of awards:))
Belaruski Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 I would have thought not Bob. You'd have to go through official sources and they'd be more interested in how and why the award left the country.
Ed_Haynes Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Can numbered Korean awards be researched? In theory, yes. In reality, absolutely not, in part for the reasons "Belaruski" brought up. Anything numbered must have (or once have had) a roll somewhere. Finding it is the trick. And the greater trick would be to go beyond a one-liner ("Xxxxx 1234 was awarded on 5 March 1965 to Xxxxx Xxxxx") to a full (Soviet-style) recommendation and personnel file. Only Soviet collectors enjoy (enjoyed?) this documentary richness. But a one-liner would be better than nothing. Assuming the DPRK did as others (USSR and MPR) did and awarded their high awards for mere survival over time, it would help to sort out real awards for doing something real from the mass of other awards for simply "stayin' alive" (sounds of John Travolta). But . . . not now for the DPRK . . . and probably not anytime soon even if those who hope (and plot) for "political change" get their way.
Bob Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 (edited) sorry - here's first pic of insideadmit it... this guy does not look Korean:) Edited July 22, 2007 by Bob
Bob Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 here's the interior of the store in Minsk that I bought it from, that is, close up of their medals cabinet 1
Bob Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 interesting: 2 mongolian awards (very expensive!)and top left a medal with Paulus + Zhukov on it (odd combination)sorry, this is not north korean but wanted to give context of where it was found... 1
Eric Gaumann Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 What's this?Currently on e, being described as "NORTH KOREA ORDER of MILITARY HONOUR CL3 . ... Pin Back with MAKER mark .. "Ugly....is it legit? 1
Ed_Haynes Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 This surely is an ugly dog, Eric.I can't find anything even remotely similar in Cabral's book, but as we know that is less than perfect.Ansent any confirmation from the wise folks here (assuming they are still about -- a lot of us seem to have vanished?), I'd avoid this with some care. Maybe the same folks who are churning outr PRC obscene fantasies have expanded into DPRK?

"Ugly....is it legit?Hi, EricRight! It is Order of Military Service Honor 3cl. It is not soviet style manufacture, it is made by NK itself. But the one you showed are in poor condition. Here is cased one of mine.Tang Si
Bob Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Can numbered Korean awards be researched? Some hopeful news: they CAN be researched. I am in touch with somebody with access to the right local authorities. It would go into too much detail right here right now to explain further. Depending on work priorities, I may decide to travel to North Korea Q1 next year to further pursue this.
