It was a pleasure, immer wieder gerne ... As none of those bars has not even one single Baden award on it I think I might give them away again, but not n o w. If someone would like to get these, please offer me something "similar" from Baden ... or, if noone wants to give me some nice Baden stuff - just some money ... PS: Talking about "something similar": has someone ever seen a ribbon bar with Baden life saving medal?!

Officer or Offiziersstellvertreter? That's in my humble opinion impossible, as the Baden Silver merit medal is the lowest Bravery award in World War I, given to Soldiers and (lower) NCOs. An Offiziersstellvertreter (very high NCO, isn't it)?) should have gotten a Z?hringer Merit cross on Karl Friedrich ribbon, and an officer a Z?hringer Lion Order ...

I've been today in Illingen. Actually, I'm going there to see and to learn and to have some nice talks, but if there's something to buy - well, why not. Three ribbon bars was it in total, a matching pair of two and a third one from a second seller - and with these ones, I think I know what the green ribbon has to be - on a RM wearer from Braunschweig: the Brunswick live saving medal as well as the Prussian! The combination is very simliar to Hauptmann von Grone's, but it isn't the same ... The third one is just a nice one with Hohenzollern House order and Austrian Iron crown - not too common on German bars.

The bars were not awarded until 1866, so the early ones are exremely rare, give to those handfull ex-soldiers in their late 70s at least ... In Baden, nice medals are actually possible to get, but really hard it's with nice old ribbons - and the bars, of course. I have by now none others than the common "1866" and "1870-1871", my father has as well the bit rarer "1870" and "1871" - no others, and we a r e looking for those ... The medals were not awarded for any war later than 1870/71, neither for China and colonial campaigns nor for World War I.

Not mine and I think the pictures are not to be used in your article Rick, bvut you have to have seen the devices (!!!) on the German/Austrian/Ottoman ribbon bars that were here in auction. The prices were limits, I have neither an idea what those beauties were really sold for nor when the auction was or is ... http://www.sixbid.com/home/auctions/ams/am...lt/h1_00016.htm

BUT some were awarded 3bXEL and had to give back their 3bX! Strange thing, as they used to award oakleaves in addition, but this may not have been "up to date" in early 20th century? It seems to have been very common at least in early 19th century, I'd guess ... BTW, H. G?ring did promote his 3bX to a 3bXEl ...

There are many, many RAO 3rd class with bow without a Crown Order on the bar, as many of those had a 2nd class - on the neck, of course. The Landwehr-Dienstauszeichnung IInd class, Schnalle (pre1913) as well as the medal (post1913) were worn by all ranks, yes - but a high officer with REO 3rd class "should" have a long service awards Ist class ... There might be exceptions, and if he wasn't a military anymore when he got the REO then for civil merit, as I said - not problem with this.
