scottish drum ?
Jock Auld replied to blueman's topic in Great Britain: Militaria: Badges, Uniforms & Equipment
Peter, Brian, Blueman, Kevin, Kevin1947,etc, I am sorry I am a hot head or a twat at times and I am sure most of you would all rather I just turned to the right and moved on as it is uncomfortable when you confront issues rather than ignore them. Kevin, it would be easier to ask what is your area rather than dance around the edge (click on his posts etc)? It remains a mystery to me and I am an avid follower of you on the other fora too? What is demonstratable is that you buy random stuff from auctions then seek other peoples opinion with a view to a quick 'flip', for sure not a crime but equaly people should know what you are about and that even a casual endorsment may mean a suspect sale for you? I notice you also seek info on militarytrader.co.uk and these folk have been recently outed on WRF as being fraudsters although it is common knowledge, I would post the link but I am unable to. Some times it goes wrong for you and for that I am grateful. It is not what these fora are about but it is becoming the standard? If we endorse this then fine, just shows its all the same pooh just a different smell. Here is no better than anywhere else. Auf wiedersehen I suppose! -

Mervyn, I would have to strongly disagree with you support of the item. If the opinion of this item can be deduced from these pictures then it makes a mockary of all the 'experts' opinions on various sites that at least ask for close ups before calling an item correct. If 'kevin1947' asks on enough forums eventualy someone on these fora expresses a 'gut feeling' that is posative, he can then move forward with a quick pitch and punt it on. The string looks very clean the varnish pretty fresh, the detail looks like 'Chinese' knock off quality, there is no size or scale to provide for comparison of anything known and does it really look nearly 300 years old? I am not convinced. Sorry. -

Found this bad boy again! I thought it was wrong when I got it but it was with another item which I paid a fair price for so this was free in effect even though it was still a disapointment when I got it in the hand. The bloke that sold it thought it was right IMO, that is to say I don't think he set out to decive me in any way. The marking is small as you can see from the pen for scale and it is rough to the touch so IMO added by some sort of machine/laser. The quality though of the mark is very high and on a period piece of pot would have a lot of folk for sure? Much of the stuff produced in the same moulds and no doubt for Army contract was unmarked, I can back that up as a statement as many pieces of pot dug up around the barracks here are unmarked, that is to say although in pieces the whole bases have no markings. Just as many do though, in my experiece it is about 60/40 against any mark. These diggings are normaly due to maintanace work and everyone thinks me odd for raking through the spoil. Perhaps I am! -
Fritz, It will be a unique item. It looks nicely made and is style wise of the period. I like it, we have a lot of Mess silver in the museum at Celle. As you can appreciate these things are often privately commisioned and I suppose a lot were melted down as scrap post both wars as there is always value in gold and silver? It probably survived since there is no swastika on it? Looking at the date it (1934) should probably be posted on the dark side? Nice bit of silver! Thanks for posting it up!

Bernhard, How 'jolly sporting' of your Col to give the enemy a fair chance! Was he shot in the back or 'fragged' at any point? He should have been! The belt is very stiff, the white finish is not blanco as I would understand it, it appears to be white version of the black stuff (forgoten the comercial name) you can buy at the US PX for boots if that makes any sense to you. It is not in the best of condition as the finish is cracking but my pal is heavy handed and a large chunk came off in his hand. I am going to store it safely until I can work out what to do with it. If I can talk him into giving me the whole uniform (he does not display his family stuff?) I will look into putting it in the museum in Celle behind glass that way the family can retain posession of it and claim it back in the future should any grandchildren catch the bug? I hope I can ensure its survival for another centuary or longer!

Guys, An old pal has just given me this for Christmas, It was his Great Grandfathers and he still has the blue uniform. He is recovering from a heart bypass and it was a nice surprise to see him up and well. He has just informed me he has added me to his will and I am set to inherit his collect as his kids have no interest and are finacialy sound. I have told him not to be so daft as he could see me out, no-one knows whats round the corner but it is nice to be thought of as 'safe hands' should it all go pear shaped for him. Anyways I don't think you see these things that often so I thought I would share it here as you all like this sort of thing! Cheers.

Guys, Another one of these today, noted last time what Jerry stated about paint work and for me it seems to be the original factory finish? Liner is in good shape. Shame it has lost its chin strap! Liner dated 1945 and is by BMB. There are markings on the shell but they are very shallow strikes and I can't make them out or get a decent picture of them, I will try in daylight perhaps that will be better. I am fairly sure the liner belongs to this lid.

3Bn have just disbanded here in Falinbostel Germany, they completed a tour of Afghan just at the end of summer then disbanded immediately afterward. They moved into MTP camo before the tour probably about a year and half or two years ago. They had a gold bullion knot that they wore on their Dress uniform and even on the wooly jersey, I think I have some somewhere, If I can find one I shall post it up. merry christmas
