Queen ( Belgian!) Elisabeth helmet
Bayern replied to Stuka f's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
Stuka : Queen Elizabeth , the consort of King Albert I was bavarian , daughter of Herzog Karl Theodor , The Duke was an ophtalmologist and cured many people with visual diseases . the sense of sight was for him nearly a obsession and a passion . his daughter appears to have the same preocupation . Nice helm , at first look i tought that it was for tankmen . -
Hello Farkas : The peakless caps in the WW1 austro hungarian Army were used mainly by the Cavalry units and the mounted Artillery . so the men wearing peakless caps could be dismounted hussars machine gunners . in that case the colour of the strip of cloth would had been dark blue . The two men placed in the center of the photo are officers , the one at the left bears a collar patch of dark colour with a rank star and at the rear of the star a badge probably that of a machine gunner . The other has a rank star and in place of a full patch only a stripe in the same dark colour . Another point : All the visible belts are of the Cavalry model .

Hello Farkas : Its not a generals uniform , look at the plain buttons , Generals used a special design of buttons with a rose on relief on it . To me is a waffenrock of medical officer in the rank of Major . Black piped in red collar and cuffs . the bicorne has not feathers .

Hello : Great Grandfather wears a not common field grey uniform , at least for NCO s . Its an Infantry one , not common are the breast pockets ,pleated and with visible buttons . The stripe of cloth behind the rank stars is in the regimental colour the colour for the 83 common IR was dark brown . the stripe visible is darker than the uniform so , could be the 83 .another option is thatthe portrayed belonged to a Honved IR . in that case the colour of the stripe must be schieffer grau a dark grey blue .

A bit more about Plesch : He served first as rearguard doctor . later he obtained his assignement to the Eastern Front . He won the EK 1 when in his words : I not lost my head and gave the orders for a retirement of my field ambulance without the loss of any wounded avoiding the russian encirclement by the use of a hidden road . In 1934 he emigrated to England and later to USA .was close friend and personal physician of Albert Einstein .

Its my pleasure . Regarding to the rectangular insignia , its possible but i believe that the POW number , was not carried in this manner . if carried . The Italian Army weared a number of speciality badges some braided over cloth but all were carried on the sleeves .

Hello : The soldier in the photo ,wears the : Distintivo per fatiche di guerra ,created in May of 1916 . it consisted in a ribbon with the national italian colours .Without star means less than a year of war . one star one year , two ,two years the maximum was four stars . The distintivo ceased in 1920 and was absorbed into the War medal . Its difficult to affirm at which branch of the ItalianArmy belonged the soldier . the mostrina of his collar is of the type used by the Artillery , and the Engineers . black in both cases with yellow piping the first and dark red in the case of the others . The Milizia territoriale of Infantry used the same type of mostrina in red and the Medical Corps also but in dark red colour . finally the Commisariat wears a medium blue one with black piping . If i am not wrong , the distintivo was mainly for soldiers serving into commands and intendenzas or mobilized to the war theatres of the Alps

Hello : The service schirmmutze worn in the field was usually a stiffened one but with only the front corset whale piece into the crown . and of course the wire ring . The Reitmutze althoug mainly a Cavalry item , was not forbidden to the other officers which in essence were considered fellow gentlemen accostumed to the practice of equestrian sports . naturally , the officers of Artillery were more close to the riders ,
