Interesting. over the years I've seen 3-4 pair of Saxon straps with squared end. I don't have the regs that discuss the straps for Saxon and other Kingdoms. I have always thought all troops would wear same uniform, cap, and straps.. Would private straps be authorized? -

That's a bit much regarding the order of precedence. It just goes to show how little people think before they act. It should below all bravery medals but ahead of all campaign or service awards. Is it purely a civilian award?

Are there maker marks? It's not an issue item in my opinion. I can't tell if it's a 20s-30s private purchase or latter copy.

Yes, I've read a memoir from a member and I think there were at the Marne in 1914 then to the Argone and then I think Verdun. Apparently the pioneers were abused greatly. sounds about right too. A unit used for any and everything the other units aren't.
