My little collection of Finnish winterwar medals
JohanH replied to JohanH's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
Hello and welcome to the forum! I suppose you have seen the list of all the different clasps in the other thread so I wont repeat it here. All the clasps are quite easy to find, atleast in Finland and to some extent also in Sweden. But the hardest one to find (in my opinion) is the Mantsinsaari clasp. Also the usual iron and bronze medals for foreigners are pretty easy to find. The iron one was awarded approximately 10 000 times and the bronze one 1961 times. The difficult thing is to find the foreigner medal documents, especially the special document for fallen soldiers. They are really rare. Tomorrow I can take some photos of the winter war medals that I have bought since the last photo. Among them is a prototype medal and some more medals for foreigners. -

Finnish order of the holy lamb
JohanH replied to JohanH's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
Hello Micke. I was one of the bidders but unfortunately not the buyer of that set. -
All I can find in my books are the statues of 1902 and they don´t mention foreign recipients criteria at all. Only that Commander 2nd class and knight 2nd class was only awarded to foreigners until 1889, after that they can be awarded to swedes too. Swedes could be awarded the order of the sword for things like long service, bravery in the field or service to the country. I am working on transcribing the award rolls for the Swedish orders from 1748 to 1974 and are almost done with commander 2nd class. My biggest issue is lack of time...

Finland My Finnish Collection 1918-1945

What would you guess an unissued piece would sell for at an auction? -
Finland My Finnish Collection 1918-1945
JohanH replied to christerd's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
I believe it’s almost impossible to put a value on such a piece. But if I would guess I think it would go for over 30 000 € in an auction. But I guess it all depends on how much the bidders want it. Can we see a picture of it? -
Finland My Finnish Collection 1918-1945
JohanH replied to christerd's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
Hello! Are you buying or selling? Is it a complete set? with cross? Breast star? Document? Since only nine were manufactured and only four ever awarded so the price between issued and unissued is huge. As far as I know there is atleast one of the awarded crosses on the private market. Is yours issued or unissued? -

Mannerheim Cross in wear
JohanH replied to BalkanCollector's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
You´re right, it´s only thorn. First I thought that he was wearing some weird variation of the tank-destroyer badge since he´s standing next to the anti-tank rifle. But it didn´t look right. The badge is white with a black tank on it (for those who didn´t know). -
Mannerheim Cross in wear
JohanH replied to BalkanCollector's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
Is he wearing a badge on his arm or is it thorn by a bullet or something? Interesting pictures btw! -
He got the Sword commander 2nd class on 5 november 1924 to be precise.

Finnish order of the holy lamb
JohanH replied to JohanH's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
Thank you for clearing out that mystery of mine! That would mean that the one I have is a knight 1st class and not a 2nd class! Yes, the old award documents are gorgeous, but the recent ones are to boring! Unfortunately I don´t have any documents for these. Yet… -
Here is my small collection of Order of the Holy Lamb from Finland. This is a church order which is awarded for long service to the Finnish church. It consists of seven classes, five orders and two medals. The number of awards are really low so it´s very difficult to find these for sale. Grand cross - 10 awarded Commander 1st class - 26 awarded Commander 2nd class - 23 awarded Knight 1st class - 26 awarded Knight 2nd class - 55 awarded Medal 1st class - 73 awarded Medal 2nd class - 34 awarded The ones I have in my collection so far is commander 2nd class, knight 2nd class and both medals. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two knight classes? I think the only difference between the commander classes is the breast star which goes with 1st class. If anyone know of any for sale, please let me know so I can try to complete my collection!

Mannerheimcross 1st class sold in Finland!
JohanH replied to JohanH's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
I don´t know what the rules are for posting pictures from auctionhouses, but if anyone has any concerns let me know and I´ll delete them. Pictures from Suomen Numismaattisen Yhdistyksen Huutokauppa no 44. -
A while ago a Finnish Mannerheim cross 1st class was sold on a auction. The order was manufactured in 8 pieces, 3 numbered and 5 unnumbered. Only two was ever awarded, one to Mannerheim himself (no 1) and the other to general Erik Heinrichs (no 2). This cross was one of the unnumbered and unissued pieces. The sale price was 33 000 € + commission. And no, I am not the lucky buyer. The Mannerheim-crosses are subject to export restrictions and may not leave Finland. And I don´t have that kind of money to spend either. This is probably one of the extremely few times such a rarity is sold at the open market! Once in a lifetime perhaps?

Swedish miniatyr bar with Finnish and German miniatyr
JohanH replied to JanneP's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
You are right. It must be L6 and that would mean 1940. Which is suitable if it´s a winter war award.
