Iron cross 2nd class question
ChrisKelly replied to Michaelwave's topic in Germany: All Eras: The Iron Cross
Preserved properly, displayed properly, further corrosion shouldn't be a problem. I'd leave them alone. Application of anything on the core of those Iron Crosses could cause what's left of the black finish to flake off. -
Both are slightly vaulted.

Do you guys think this cross is genuine?
ChrisKelly replied to Henke's topic in Germany: All Eras: The Iron Cross
Looks like a Weimar Era cross, high-quality "jeweler-made" example. Likely a solid silver (.800) frame. That is a really nice example, and absolutely genuine. -
Some From My Collection...
ChrisKelly replied to ChrisKelly's topic in Germany: All Eras: The Iron Cross
Brass or more likely tombak. My understanding is these Iron Crosses were struck primarily for kriegsmarine personnel. Iron can corrode quickly in the salt/saline environment that is the Atlantic, so these were more resistant to rust and degradation. -

Just a guess... Looking at the crown on the guard, I think it's a German naval/maritime sabre from the time of the kaisers. Not my bailiwick, but a really cool, neat sword. No, I've never seen one like it. It may be custom made. Can you get any more images (especially the blade, and a scabbard, if it has one)?

Here's one for sale. Price is $850USD. Whether or not it's genuine, I don't know. Source: https://griffinmilitaria.com/product/luftschutz-civil-air-defense-decoration-first-class/ -
Luftschutz luftschutz medal
ChrisKelly replied to GODISHIGH's topic in State, Civil Awards & Decorations
My latest acquisition. This is an early "lightweight" (non-zinc) type. The ribbon is sewn together at the top, but missing the pin on the reverse. The suspension ring is not welded nor is there a hallmark on it. -
