I've actually found in an upcomming sale from the same auctioneer a journal which documents every many who enlisted in Winnipeg for the first two Canadian contingents. Morris is apparently shown with A company of the Cameronians wearing his battledress and kilt. I wonder if the two lots are related? I'm very pleased at the price i managed to get the group because Canadian Dieppe groups tend to go for considerably more. Many Canadians view Dieppe as just as significant a moment in ww2 as Vimy was in ww1. Cheers Chris

WOW Jean-Paul I had no idea what the citations would hold and am just as surprised as Irish that he did not receive an MM or even possibly DCM. I'm thinking the fact he was taken POW factored into the decision or that there were a lot of gallant deeds at Dieppe and not everyone got the award they deserved. I have posted this group on another forum but not here. As there hasn't been anything Canadian posted in a while i thought may as well put it up for review. As those who know me know i collect first world war medals to men from Medicine Hat AB and have tried to stick rigidly to that theme over the last few years. However, when a great group is offered i just can't resist. Recently a Canadian auction offered the following Canada WWII Gallantry Group of 5 to H191122 William James Morris Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada 1939/45 Star, Defense Medal, CVSM & Bar, War Medal, Croix de Guerre Bronze Star Confirmed on Roll as Mentioned in Despatches. Normally a ww2 group doesn't appeal to me as they usually aren't very well documented. This group however came with his Wallet, Final Soldiers Paybook, Final Soldiers Service Book, Notebook, and a keepsake bible with dedication written in it to him and some other souvenir books. Enough documentation to set this appart for me (and it supposedly came direct from the family). What else appeals to me? The MID and C De G were for his actions at Dieppe where he was taken POW!!!! And for a Canadian collector Dieppe is one of the Holy grails. Havn't done alot of research yet so if anyone has anything to aid in the process please do it would be much appreciated. Because the auction made no mention of Dieppe or that he was POW i managed to get it for starting bid ($400cdn) a real steal in my opinion what do others think? Cheers Chris

not being a collector of Imperial German groups i'm certainly not the one to say for certain its bad but i know it has sat there a long..... time. This one just sold on Ebay but i really don't like the looks of it either. What do other members think?

It's a shoulder pad used to absorb recoil when shooting. Even today in marksmanship competions you see people wearing them. I know they were issued in ww1 to some men in the MGC. Cheers Chris

The group appears to me to be: ISM, MM (possibly with removed rosette denoting second award) 39-45 star, Africa star with 8th army numerial removed, Italy star, F&G Star Defence medal 39-45 war medal (with possibly removed MID), Korea Medal, UN Korea GSM 1918-62, CSM 1962, UNFICYP, 1935 jubilee 1977 jubilee, army LS&GC, MSM, Swatch of cloth for mounting a kings / Queens commendation A highly unlikely combination. I hate to say it but with so little to go off of it will be next to impossible. Can you take a loop to the edge and see if anything else is revealed? My dad has an extremely powerful digital microscope that he uses in coin inspections. If all else fails you can send it to me and i can give it a whirl on that beastie. Cheers Chris

Unfortunately i think you will find Soviet research isn't "Cheap" and when i've had items researched it's always been at least $80 by the time all's been said and done. Compared to my CEF research which costs me on average about $5.00 per soldier. Cheers Chris

Very interesting. Next time you speak with him you should ask him two questions. 1. Why does he not have the 1939-45 star? ( i suspect he wasn't in Europe for a full 180 days) 2. Is he eligble for the ACSM? The ACSM is awarded for 1080 days aggregated service in those theatres for which the GSM (e.g. Northern Ireland, Air Ops Iraq), an OSM (e.g. Sierra Leone or Afghanistan) or the Iraq Medal has been issued. An additional 1080 days is required for the award of the Clasp to the ACSM. More than 1 Clasp may be earned.

Do you know how long he was in Europe for? In theory i belive he could qualify for the F&G by entering into the active theatre for one day (or was it 30) where he needed 6 months service in active operations for the 39-45. Perhaps he just didn't stay in Europe long enough to qualify? I can't say i've ever seen a group with a campaign star without the 39-45 though.... Cheers Chris

Actually there was one Captain Brett in the CEF. His Details: William Brett Original member of the 2nd CMR with previous service in the BCH. It is possible but the degree of information available depends on the Era your researching. What would you date the photo? I'm assuming ww1 based on the area you posted this but if even just slighlty later data on the man could be hard to find. Cheers Chris
