They are simply using dictionary Заполярный - a) polar b) trans-polar Both variants are possible since Заполярье — область от полярного круга до полюса в Северном и Южном полушариях. Trans-polar - extending across or crossing either of the Polar Regions. I am afraid that linguistic purist could choose trans-polar variant P.S. The medal looks like original piece. War vintage.
