    1. Very nice set! How did you come by them? I'm guessing those bars were what he wore immediately after the end of the war and he left military service shortly thereafter.
    2. The black ones are indicative of only a slightly later date of use I believe.
    3. Here's the latest bar in question mounted with a few of his buddies. Do we need a "show us your XYZ display" thread or have we all been through that enough times already?
    4. Thanks gentlemen. I liked this one mostly because the main metal mounting bar is *not* the blackened metal style that is most prevalent but a more plain steel finish (complete with rusty bits). I am assuming the middle ribbon is indeed a OG3 mostly because I want this bar to be pre-5/45. I have it mounted and labeled in my GPW display in the correct order (not backward like in my first image above). And the pin and metal bar are magnetic. The seller (a Finn) didn't have much of a story (other than 'I got it in Russia a few years back') when I asked about it. Sadly he has another one similar to this on eBay now marked as "WW2 era" but it's of the blackened bar variety, the ribbons have different colored tabs and there are obvious new scratch marks where the tabs have been folded over. Sadly mine seems to have fresh scratch marks on it as well, especially around the OG/VoG ribbon tabs. But I like it anyway, it looks nice. Surprisingly, considering the plethora of Soviet stuff I have, it's the *only* Soviet ribbon bar I have. If I weren't unemployed at the moment I'd take a shot at a few 60s era bars I've found on the web. In case you haven't noticed Soviet ribbon bars are just as addictive as Soviet ODMs.
    5. Here's the first Soviet bar I've ever gotten. I was hoping it was from the GPW era. Very small and thin.
    6. Not to sound like a know-it-all, but... You need to lower the summer-white officer caps's cockarde to the same position as the black one. Also, as the visor on the black one does not have any oak leaves on the visor, the gold braided chin-cord needs to be replaced with a normal chin-strap like the summer white's. Cool. Thanks for the info Richie. I pasted your comments here in case somebody else could learn from them. I was under the misguided impression that the "leather" chin cord was for non-coms (Petty Officers?) and the braided cord (without leaves on the visor) for junior officers. Thanks for straightening me out.
    7. My modest naval collection. Nothing special....all late models. But I like 'em. Some, if not all will remain when I cull the hat herd in the future.
    8. Effin' awesome dood!!!!!!!!! Whata ride. And what a chick magnet.....
    9. The first one awarded in early 1944, the second is harder to tell. Try Paul Schmitt's Echoes Of War for info on dates and researching.
    10. Guys, please don't get me hooked on this research thing, I'm begging you. Nice BM Doc. I love that well worn look.
    11. Is that not the Distinguished Labour Medal ribbon or is it a scanning effect?
    12. Quick update on part of the story: http://mattdowling.blogspot.com/2005/12/na...-body-lice.html
    13. A shame the link no longer works, I wanted to read that article. Shame as well that documentary is not available at Netflix. My luck's out today it seems. Found this though http://www.balticsworldwide.com/napoleon_graves.htm Off to the store to buy lottery tix!
    14. and the reverse. The reverse of the screwplate is pebbled
    15. Thanks for your reply Christian. You're the second person who felt it was not right. I think I'll take it back.
    16. Got this recently with a group of items. I took a flyer on it as I may be starting to get hooked on Soviet badges. Any idea what it might be? The screwback is named to a maker in Warsaw. No other markings. It's a 5 piece, including screpost and screwback. TIA (wait for the 3 images)
    17. I like the drawers, and the goodies inside them even more! Nevsky, Kutuzov, numbered ORBs, Ushakov, Nakhimov, OG1..... SWEET
    18. Thanks Ed for so many great pictures. It really is nice to see......other places. The first and third images are really very nice. I notice the lack of traffic on the streets (compared to south Florida in winter). Is traffic really as light as that? Mongolian ODMs are, of course, great but it's really nice to see something other than those. Having said that I happened to notice a certain part of the mural at The Zaisan Memorial. In the photoshopped image below we see some particularly intersting images. Was the artist just guilty of wishful thinking or do these models for said mural with their western-style, upgraded "racks" wander about Main Street in downtown UB? I know it's very unprofessional and ungentlemanly-like to speak of these sort of things publically but for some reason my eyes were drawn to them and I just had to ask. Apologies in advance for such wanton thoughts.
    19. Take a peek at Andrew's EXCELLENT site and this particular page: http://mondvor.narod.ru/Kolodki/FiveCornersKol.htm He's got us all beat. PS. Have you noticed the images there loading a lot faster of late? yay!!
