Modern Ribbon. Why?
Odulf replied to Chris Boonzaier's topic in Great Britain: Orders, Gallantry, Campaign Medals
Though I have sold almost all of my British medals, this is one I've kept, not because it is so valuable, but because it moves me. A 1914-15 Star to a Bhistie (water carrier), attached as a servant, no military number) to the 1st Bn. Durham Lt. Inf. when they were stationed on the NW Frontier of India, during the Great War. Obviously, this recipient had such pride in his medal, that when the ribbon wore out he repaired it with a piece of local linnen (probably cut from some waist material). B.t.w. if any of you have a need for original Great War Ribbons (watered) I still have some small stock mostly from old medals (so used and folded) but usable still. I'm selling off this stuff, so if you are interested send me a pm (first come first served). -
Navy Hat & Tally
Odulf replied to muckaroon1960's topic in Great Britain: Militaria: Badges, Uniforms & Equipment
The tally looks to be a modern reproduction, this can be verified when looking a the reverse, in the 1980s a new manufacture/weave was used and the gold has a "stay-brite" look and feel. -
Indian Army Victory Medals
Odulf replied to IrishGunner's topic in Inter-Allied Victory Medals of the Great War
I've had a vast collection of Victory Medals to Indian recipients, but I never noticed any difference with those issued to British personnel. -

Maybe another line of investigation Neil. I don't know if any of the ship's officers were awarded for this action. As these are minor units, if any decoration was given it would probably be a DSC. After the action, on 01-01-1915, 10-02-1915, 15-03-1915 etc. DSC were awarded to RN and RNR Lieutenants. Perhaps one of these was in connection to the action off Great Yarmout. I don't have the Naval Yearbooks for 1914/15 any more, so I cannot look into the matter any further. Perhaps a library can help you, and what I would be looking for is: "The Fleet Annual and Naval Year Book 1915". This volume is in a series which was started in 1905 and published by Chapman & Hall Ltd. in Covent Garden. The 1915 volume deals with the actions which took place before 01-03-1915. It gives much detail an lots of names. Best of luck with your research, and keep us posted...

Did the regulations not state that beards and whiskers were not alowed for Army personnel...? -
These are the medals of a friend, who has died some 30 years ago. He served as a Leading Stoker in Korea, in the Frigate Hr.Ms. Johan Maurits van Nassau, and he was pensioned a Naval Lieutenant (E). His medals are: Silver Medal of the Order of Oranje-Nassau, with swords (for Military Service) Cross for Justice and Freedom (with clasp Korea 1950) Cross of New Guinea (with clasp 1962) Naval Long Service Medal in Silver UNSM (Dutch issue) Korean War Medal
