Ferdinand Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I recently encountered this one:I have no idea what to think of it. It's very ugly so it can't be made to deceive. And why would someone fake such a cheap and common medal?
Paul R Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Wow!! Someone must have done this out of boredom! This is the very first Jubilee repro I have seen!!!Paul
Riley1965 Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Stippled?!!! Boredom must have led to insanity!!! U G L Y !!! Doc
Bryan Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I've seen a similar medal discuss on the other soviet forum. This was maybe made for a film or for tourists before the end of the USSR.
Christophe Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Yes, for a film would be the best guess. But for a film that goes quite in details (it's not a Lenin or a ORB...)... I have no better theory... Ch.
Ferdinand Posted February 24, 2007 Author Posted February 24, 2007 Even if it was for a movie; why would you produce such a piece if you can get an original one so easily?
Takc Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I think it was not very successful try to restore the medal.I have seen few medals in different places and in ifferent circumstances, which were corroded, due to the bad conditions of their storage. For example, it may be lost somewhere in the village near the house, and then found and cleaned and restored by this way.It is probably not a fake.Or, someone tried to get trained to make fake medals and started with this one.You need to know what metal it is made of.If it's iron or similar hard-melting alloy, then it's not a fake. If it's made of tin or similar soft and easy-melting alloy, then it's fake.Anyway, it's a garbage.
Bryan Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Even if it was for a movie; why would you produce such a piece if you can get an original one such a piece?Well before the fall of the Soviet Union, you wouldn't get such a piece so easy.
Christophe Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Well before the fall of the Soviet Union, you wouldn't get such a piece so easy. I agree. But, who will ever know why this piece has been made... ??Ch.
Paul R Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 For what it is worth, I would keep it! It is definitely an interesting piece!
Christophe Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Good point.Could it be a "museum copy" dating before the end of the USSR ?Who will ever know ?Ferdinand, if you don't want to keep it, please, let me know... Cheers.Ch.
JimZ Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Is it heavy? Is it lead? Looking at it I'd go so far as to say that it was cast in some sort of plaster!Maybe a kid somewhere was preparing a scholl project about medals and his dad decided to take a plaster cast (or make a lead cast) of a few medals for the project! Just an idea anyways My dad always came up with bright ideas for my school projects when I was young ...... Jim
Ferdinand Posted February 25, 2007 Author Posted February 25, 2007 Gentlemen, I'm sorry, this piece is not in my collection. A friend send me the picture. I'm also interested in the size, weight and material.Auke
Ed_Haynes Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 OK, so now absolutely EVERYTHING is being faked!!
Christophe Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 I think this looks more like a copy (for which use ?) than a fake made to deceive.Ch.
Ulsterman Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 This might well be a "fake" made for the pre 1989 days, when there was a small, but very expensive russian/Soviet collecting market. Some of these were made in the UK and sold by dealers who also specialized in TR items."Antique Arms and militeria" I believe had a small article on these @ 1976 or so and Wallis and Wallis auctions also noted "cast" modern Soviet awards.
Ferdinand Posted February 25, 2007 Author Posted February 25, 2007 I informed where my friend found this picture, and he remembered it was on the 'other' Soviet Forum:http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/soviet-...lee-medals.html
hhbooker2 Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Years ago I found a box of lead medals that were crude like that and saw an ad clipped out with them stating they were sold through the mail to collectors and were something like 5 for $1
JimZ Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 OK, so now absolutely EVERYTHING is being faked!! If it isn't yet it will be soon!! Are you in the least bit surprised
