Alex K Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Anyone have any to add?ThanksChrisI have this one, includes a superb EK1, no motif on the front thoughregardsAlex
Stogieman Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 I have always felt that this style of case (with the nail-type catch) were leftovers from 1870.
Brian R Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I have always felt that this style of case (with the nail-type catch) were leftovers from 1870.I have had three of these cases (now have only two). All three have come with Godet marked EKs (G on the pin). I'm curious as to what other marked crosses have come with this case type.
Mike K Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Here are my four - all are slightly different. The top right example is actually a a very dark burgundy, even though the scan makes it look black. Note that it has a gold stamped cross whereas the two lower ones have silver crosses. As for makers, the crosses currently residing in the cases are We, KO, WS (incuse relief stamping) and an Fr+W (that's in the top right case but I added it - the others arrived in their cases.RegardsMike
nesredep Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Hello!Very interesting tread. All the best Nesredep
Scott Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Here's mine - much like Chris's at the top. The cross is an 'Fr'.Scott
Brian R Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Here are the Godets I mentioned earlier...to the left - awarded to a Lt of RIR 212 (I have the the shipping carton with his name)center - engraved to a Haupt. of R.I.R. 13to the right - near mint, but no longer in my possessionI like Stogiman's theory about the leftovers. But, I wonder if they were continually made throughout the late 1800's through 1914 and purchased by the various EK makers; even during the early years of WWI.
Chris Boonzaier Posted May 3, 2008 Author Posted May 3, 2008 Maybe a syle developed after 1870 and continued uo to and after the outbreak of the war? I think, given the amount of 1870EK1s and how many burgandy cases you see that it is unlikely that there were so many "Extras".Maybe in 1915, or 16 somone said... "Hey, burgandy is like.... soooooooo uncool... lets change the color..." and that was that...
Eric Stahlhut Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 here are a few more--all pretty much the same. gold foil cross on lid. each ek is from a different maker.
