Komtur Posted April 13, 2007 Author Posted April 13, 2007 Yessss, it must be Emsmann Thanks Bernd D!I found him in the Ordensalmanach 1908/09. I?ll post a scan laterKomtur
Guest Rick Research Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Now can we see what he's wearing on the OTHER side? Hugo Emsmann was born in Stettin 26 April 1857. He died in Berlin-Charlottenburg 12 December 1933. Service in the navy from 12 April 1874 to 16 October 1909, then called back up for war service August 1914 to November 1918 as commander of the "Grossradiostation" Eilvese and at disposal of the Admiralty Staff.
Riley1965 Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 That's a GREAT photograph!!! I just love these pics and the information about their service!!! Doc
VtwinVince Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 In German that's what we would call a real "Weihnachtsbaum".
Komtur Posted April 13, 2007 Author Posted April 13, 2007 Thanks to all of you, now we know him. Additionaly I will post the information about Konteradmiral Hugo Emsmann I found in the Deutscher Ordensalmanach 1908/09. Most of the decorations seen on the foto are covered there. Only the Oldenburg house order Peter Friedrich Ludwig is missing. But the source of Bern D mentioned "Oldb. HuVO, Ehrengro?komturkreuz". According to Friedhelm Beyreiss "Der Hausorden .... des Gro?herzogtums Oldenburg" it is Gro?komtur - a cross a bit larger then the Komtur to wear together with a star identical to the grand cross star, but the star to wear on the right side of the chest (see the picture of Georg von Euken). I wonder why Emsmann pinned his star on the left side and why is the center of this star so light (the center of the star is normally dark blue) Any ideas

GreyC Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 Hi, this is an old post, but I´d like to present a photo of Hugo Emsmann as Kommandeur of Helgoland around 1908. GreyC
Glenn J Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 GreyC, he appears to have the ribbon of the Iron Cross 2nd Class in his lapel. I therefore assume this is in fact an early war photograph. Regards Glenn
GreyC Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 Hi Glenn, I was told by an expert on German colonial questions that it is not the EKII but the KO4x for his stint in Samoa in 1888. GreyC
Kriegsmarine Admiral Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 (edited) Hello guys, here is a photo of Emsmann from "Deutschlands Admirale 1849-1945" Band 1. Below it is his entry in the 1909 Kaiserliche Marine Rangliste. Since he was active during WW1 as "Offizier zur Disposition in aktiven Dienststellung" it is odd that he isn't listed in the 1916 and 1918 Rangliste under that section. I have two question regarding his awards: 1. Does anyone know the class of his Turkish Medal of Merit of the Red Crescent visible on Komtur's photo above the Gallipoli Star? The Medal of the Red Crescent came in 3 classes: Bronze, Silver and Gold. 2. On the ribbon bar posted by Gensui we can see he also had the China Medal. Most likely for his service during the Boxer Rebellion with the SMS Cormoran. Would the class of this medal for him be Bronze (for combatants) or Steel (for non-combatants)? Thanks! Kriegsmarine Admiral Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 Can anyone answer on my two questions? Thanks...
