Alexander Wang Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Hi,gentlemen, after I have read the biography of Franz Ritter von Epp,I'm interested in his long ribbon bar.I want to make out all the medals on his bar,but I cannot.Anyone know for sure? I really need help Here are some pictures of him:thanks,Alexander
Guest Rick Research Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Ritter von Epp had so many awards that he rarely wore them all-- so identifying what is in any given photograph can often be difficult. He also-- as the ones you have shown indicate-- apparently had multiple SETS of medal bars depending on which uniform he was wearing and when.In the first photo, for instance, he is wearing his Third Reich general's uniform with a quite improper pre-1935 medal bar. The first awards on THAT set are:Bavarian Military merit Order 3rd Class with Crown and Swords (BMV3aX) for WW1Bavarian Military Merit Order-Knight 1st X (for Southwest Africa)Bavarian Military Merit Order-Knight 2nd X (for China)Prussian Hohenzollern House Order 3rd Class X for WW1Prussiaan Iron Cross 2nd Class 1914Prussian Red Eagle Order 4th Class X for Southwest AfricaPrussian Crown Order 4th X for China....and on into multiple rows, depending on what he decided to wear that day!By the way, he was as nasty as his expression usually is in all his photos-- glowering into the camera. He had a terrible temper, and was referred to (behind his back ) as Old Mother of God because of his favorite Bavarian exclamation of rage "Gottesmutter!!!"
Dave Danner Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 A better picture of the first double medal bar. What is the cross between the last MVO and the HHO3X? It looks like Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

paul wood Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 They are effectively commemoratives and presumably were not listed. Paul
Chris Boonzaier Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I wonder what happened to his documents and awards?
Claudio Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Dear forumites, I'm trying to identify the exact ribbons on this picture of Ritter von Epp: Here below is represented the ribbon bar as what I can see... Von Epp used ribbon devices or didn't when I should have... the forth Prussian Iron Cross ribbon should be with swords (EK2, HHOX, RAO4X + KO4X), but as you can see there aren't any sword devices. Furthermore I'm not so sure about the one immediately before the EK2 and the last ones (probably austrian ones). This photograph will be used for my brother to paint his portrait and depict as faithfully as he can the ribbons on his chest. Any valuable inputs, comments or addenda from all of you guys will be immensely appreciated from myself and my brother. Thank you in advance. Cheers, Claudio
