Stogieman Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 My understanding is these were awrded for excelling in the concentration area. So far, I have seen Infantry & Artillery. Were there others?
Stogieman Posted May 22, 2008 Author Posted May 22, 2008 The quality of these early, mirror-back badges is just stunning. Anyone know when/how long they were awarded? Here's the reverse of the infantry badge:

Stogieman,I am not certain that this is for "Excellent Infantry" as you state. On the badge, it is written "Excellent Shooter".Marc
Stogieman Posted May 22, 2008 Author Posted May 22, 2008 Hi Marc, thanks. My translation skills with cyrrilic are non-existant. What does this one say?Excellent Artillery?Perhaps they are badges for achieving in the different military arts?
Stogieman Posted May 22, 2008 Author Posted May 22, 2008 Reverse. Again a mirror-back badge with no numbers.
Kev in Deva Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 (edited) My understanding is these were awrded for excelling in the concentration area. So far, I have seen Infantry & Artillery. Were there others?Hallo Stogieman, Badge 1:-More than likely an early* post WW" Skill At Arms Award for proficiency with Rifle, S.M.G., M.G., and Grenade. Now the question would be is the same badge given for a PASS with just one of the weapons,or had the soldier to qualify on all the weapons.* I think early as all the weapons featured are WW2 vintage and the badge has quality construction.Kevin in Deva. Ulsterman Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 (edited) Stogie:According to Reimer (a source I trust, but very much would like to verify if you know what I mean), pp. 143, the above badges are early "Excellent Infantry and "Excellent artillerist" badges-similar to the expertise badges the Russians had. Later the Bulgarians went to a Russian style shield system with similar "excellence" areas (supply/baking? etc.). Edited May 22, 2008 by Ulsterman
Gordon Craig Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Stogieman,The cyrillic writing on your badge would be Otlichnik when transliterated. A word you often see asociated with Russian type militaria but I can not remember what it meansUlsterman,What is the name of the Reimer book you referred to? Always looking to add reference material to my library.Regards,Gordon
Theodor Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Otlichnik means Excellent. But I mean excellent person - someone who makes something in an excellent way.

Stogieman Posted May 23, 2008 Author Posted May 23, 2008 Thanks much for everyone's help! Has anyone ever seen different variations on these early badges?Anyone have examples of the later style mentioned by Ulsterman?
Theodor Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Speaking of military excellence, here are mine. First, Excellence in the Railway Troops. A massive piece, see how big it is compared to a big GTO badge.
Theodor Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 (edited) Then Excellent in the combat and political training. Quite large, too. Edited May 24, 2008 by Theodor
Theodor Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 This one is not so large and I am not even sure if it is military - People's Shooter
Stogieman Posted May 31, 2008 Author Posted May 31, 2008 Documented set for Excellent Artillery Badge. Better scans upon arrival!
Stogieman Posted May 31, 2008 Author Posted May 31, 2008 We will test reading skills when it arrives.... there seems to be much hand-writing on this one!

Stogieman Posted March 21, 2009 Author Posted March 21, 2009 Seems a good place to tuck this... Paper & badge together. Is "People's Shooter" really the translation? Theodor, I'm sorry I missed your post, I have been away for awhile. I would love a translation on the document that goes with the artillery badge! The People's Shooter, Second Class:
